* logfs: remove from treeChristoph Hellwig2016-12-1415-9137/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Logfs was introduced to the kernel in 2009, and hasn't seen any non drive-by changes since 2012, while having lots of unsolved issues including the complete lack of error handling, with more and more issues popping up without any fixes. The logfs.org domain has been bouncing from a mail, and the maintainer on the non-logfs.org domain hasn't repsonded to past queries either. | * | fs: Replace CURRENT_TIME with current_time() for inode timestampsDeepa Dinamani2016-09-274-8/+8
| |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | CURRENT_TIME macro is not appropriate for filesystems as it doesn't use the right granularity for filesystem timestamps. Use current_time() instead. CURRENT_TIME is also not y2038 safe. This is also in preparation for the patch that transitions vfs timestamps to use 64 bit time and hence make them y2038 safe. As part of the effort current_time() will be extended to do range checks. Hence, it is necessary for all file system timestamps to use current_time(). Also, current_time() will be transitioned along with vfs to be y2038 safe. Note that whenever a single call to current_time() is used to change timestamps in different inodes, it is because they share the same time granularity. * | Merge branch 'salted-string-hash'Linus Torvalds2016-07-281-3/+3
|\ \ | |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This changes the vfs dentry hashing to mix in the parent pointer at the _beginning_ of the hash, rather than at the end. That actually improves both the hash and the code generation, because we can move more of the computation to the "static" part of the dcache setup, and do less at lookup runtime. It turns out that a lot of other hash users also really wanted to mix in a base pointer as a 'salt' for the hash, and so the slightly extended interface ends up working well for other cases too. Users that want a string hash that is purely about the string pass in a 'salt' pointer of NULL. * merge branch 'salted-string-hash': fs/dcache.c: Save one 32-bit multiply in dcache lookup vfs: make the string hashes salt the hash

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch converts the simple bi_rw use cases in the block, drivers, mm and fs code to set/get the bio operation using bio_set_op_attrs/bio_op These should be simple one or two liner cases, so I just did them in one patch. * mm, fs: get rid of PAGE_CACHE_* and page_cache_{get,release} macrosKirill A. Shutemov2016-04-047-57/+57
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} macros were introduced *long* time ago with promise that one day it will be possible to implement page cache with bigger chunks than PAGE_SIZE. This promise never materialized. And unlikely will. We have many places where PAGE_CACHE_SIZE assumed to be equal to PAGE_SIZE. And it's constant source of confusion on whether PAGE_CACHE_* or PAGE_* constant should be used in a particular case, especially on the border between fs and mm. Global switching to PAGE_CACHE_SIZE != PAGE_SIZE would cause to much breakage to be doable. Let's stop pretending that pages in page cache are special. They are not. The changes are pretty straight-forward: - <foo> << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - <foo> >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) -> <foo>; - PAGE_CACHE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN} -> PAGE_{SIZE,SHIFT,MASK,ALIGN}; - page_cache_get() -> get_page(); - page_cache_release() -> put_page(); This patch contains automated changes generated with coccinelle using script below. For some reason, coccinelle doesn't patch header files. I've called spatch for them manually. The only adjustment after coccinelle is revert of changes to PAGE_CAHCE_ALIGN definition: we are going to drop it later. There are few places in the code where coccinelle didn't reach. I'll fix them manually in a separate patch. Comments and documentation also will be addressed with the separate patch. virtual patch @@ expression E; @@ - E << (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ expression E; @@ - E >> (PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT - PAGE_SHIFT) + E @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SHIFT + PAGE_SHIFT @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_SIZE + PAGE_SIZE @@ @@ - PAGE_CACHE_MASK + PAGE_MASK @@ expression E; @@ - PAGE_CACHE_ALIGN(E) + PAGE_ALIGN(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_get(E) + get_page(E) @@ expression E; @@ - page_cache_release(E) + put_page(E) Signed-off-by: Kirill A. For the list, see below: - threadinfo - task_struct - task_delay_info - pid - cred - mm_struct - vm_area_struct and vm_region (nommu) - anon_vma and anon_vma_chain - signal_struct - sighand_struct - fs_struct - files_struct - fdtable and fdtable->full_fds_bits - dentry and external_name - inode for all filesystems. This is the most tedious part, because most filesystems overwrite the alloc_inode method. The list is far from complete, so feel free to add more objects. Nevertheless, it should be close to "account everything" approach and keep most workloads within bounds. Malevolent users will be able to breach the limit, but this was possible even with the former "account everything" approach (simply because it did not account everything in fact). | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently we have two different ways to signal an I/O error on a BIO: (1) by clearing the BIO_UPTODATE flag (2) by returning a Linux errno value to the bi_end_io callback The first one has the drawback of only communicating a single possible error (-EIO), and the second one has the drawback of not beeing persistent when bios are queued up, and are not passed along from child to parent bio in the ever more popular chaining scenario. Having both mechanisms available has the additional drawback of utterly confusing driver authors and introducing bugs where various I/O submitters only deal with one of them, and the others have to add boilerplate code to deal with both kinds of error returns. So add a new bi_error field to store an errno value directly in struct bio and remove the existing mechanisms to clean all this up. * mm + fs: store shadow entries in page cacheJohannes Weiner2014-04-031-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Reclaim will be leaving shadow entries in the page cache radix tree upon evicting the real page. As those pages are found from the LRU, an iput() can lead to the inode being freed concurrently. At this point, reclaim must no longer install shadow pages because the inode freeing code needs to ensure the page tree is really empty. Add an address_space flag, AS_EXITING, that the inode freeing code sets under the tree lock before doing the final truncate. Reclaim will check for this flag before installing shadow pages. In the bug fixes category, of note is a fix for on-line resizing file systems where the block size is smaller than the page size (i.e., file systems 1k blocks on x86, or more interestingly file systems with 4k blocks on Power or ia64 systems.) In the cleanup category, the ext4's punch hole implementation was significantly improved by Lukas Czerner, and now supports bigalloc file systems. In addition, Jan Kara significantly cleaned up the write submission code path. We also improved error checking and added a few sanity checks. In the optimizations category, two major optimizations deserve mention. The first is that ext4_writepages() is now used for nodelalloc and ext3 compatibility mode. This allows writes to be submitted much more efficiently as a single bio request, instead of being sent as individual 4k writes into the block layer (which then relied on the elevator code to coalesce the requests in the block queue). Secondly, the extent cache shrink mechanism, which was introduce in 3.9, no longer has a scalability bottleneck caused by the i_es_lru spinlock. Other optimizations include some changes to reduce CPU usage and to avoid issuing empty commits unnecessarily." * tag 'ext4_for_linus' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tytso/ext4: (86 commits) ext4: optimize starting extent in ext4_ext_rm_leaf() jbd2: invalidate handle if jbd2_journal_restart() fails ext4: translate flag bits to strings in tracepoints ext4: fix up error handling for mpage_map_and_submit_extent() jbd2: fix theoretical race in jbd2__journal_restart ext4: only zero partial blocks in ext4_zero_partial_blocks() ext4: check error return from ext4_write_inline_data_end() ext4: delete unnecessary C statements ext3,ext4: don't mess with dir_file->f_pos in htree_dirblock_to_tree() jbd2: move superblock checksum calculation to jbd2_write_superblock() ext4: pass inode pointer instead of file pointer to punch hole ext4: improve free space calculation for inline_data ext4: reduce object size when !CONFIG_PRINTK ext4: improve extent cache shrink mechanism to avoid to burn CPU time ext4: implement error handling of ext4_mb_new_preallocation() ext4: fix corruption when online resizing a fs with 1K block size ext4: delete unused variables ext4: return FIEMAP_EXTENT_UNKNOWN for delalloc extents jbd2: remove debug dependency on debug_fs and update Kconfig help text jbd2: use a single printk for jbd_debug() ...
| * mm: change invalidatepage prototype to accept lengthLukas Czerner2013-05-212-2/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently there is no way to truncate partial page where the end truncate point is not at the end of the page. This is because it was not needed and the functionality was enough for file system truncate operation to work properly. However more file systems now support punch hole feature and it can benefit from mm supporting truncating page just up to the certain point. Specifically, with this functionality truncate_inode_pages_range() can be changed so it supports truncating partial page at the end of the range (currently it will BUG_ON() if 'end' is not at the end of the page). This commit changes the invalidatepage() address space operation prototype to accept range to be invalidated and update all the instances for it. We also change the block_invalidatepage() in the same way and actually make a use of the new length argument implementing range invalidation. Actual file system implementations will follow except the file systems where the changes are really simple and should not change the behaviour in any way .Implementation for truncate_page_range() which will be able to accept page unaligned ranges will follow as well. * fs: Limit sys_mount to only request filesystem modules.Eric W. Biederman2013-03-031-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Modify the request_module to prefix the file system type with "fs-" and add aliases to all of the filesystems that can be built as modules to match. A common practice is to build all of the kernel code and leave code that is not commonly needed as modules, with the result that many users are exposed to any bug anywhere in the kernel. Looking for filesystems with a fs- prefix limits the pool of possible modules that can be loaded by mount to just filesystems trivially making things safer with no real cost. Using aliases means user space can control the policy of which filesystem modules are auto-loaded by editing /etc/modprobe.d/*.conf with blacklist and alias directives. Allowing simple, safe, well understood work-arounds to known problematic software. This also addresses a rare but unfortunate problem where the filesystem name is not the same as it's module name and module auto-loading would not work. While writing this patch I saw a handful of such cases. The most significant being autofs that lives in the module autofs4. This is relevant to user namespaces because we can reach the request module in get_fs_type() without having any special permissions, and people get uncomfortable when a user specified string (in this case the filesystem type) goes all of the way to request_module. After having looked at this issue I don't think there is any particular reason to perform any filtering or permission checks beyond making it clear in the module request that we want a filesystem module. The common pattern in the kernel is to call request_module() without regards to the users permissions. In general all a filesystem module does once loaded is call register_filesystem() and go to sleep. Which means there is not much attack surface exposed by loading a filesytem module unless the filesystem is mounted. In a user namespace filesystems are not mounted unless .fs_flags = FS_USERNS_MOUNT, which most filesystems do not set today.
