* usermodehelper: Tidy up waitingJeremy Fitzhardinge2007-07-181-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Rather than using a tri-state integer for the wait flag in call_usermodehelper_exec, define a proper enum, and use that. I've preserved the integer values so that any callers I've missed should still work OK. * [POWERPC] Souped-up of_platform_device supportBenjamin Herrenschmidt2006-12-041-2/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch first splits of_device.c and of_platform.c, the later containing the bits relative to of_platform_device's. On the "breaks" side of things, drivers uisng of_platform_device(s) need to include asm/of_platform.h now and of_(un)register_driver is now of_(un)register_platform_driver. In addition to a few utility functions to locate of_platform_device(s), the main new addition is of_platform_bus_probe() which allows the platform code to trigger an automatic creation of of_platform_devices for a whole tree of devices. The function acts based on the type of the various "parent" devices encountered from a provided root, using either a default known list of bus types that can be "probed" or a passed-in list. It will only register devices on busses matching that list, which mean that typically, it will not register PCI devices, as expected (since they will be picked up by the PCI layer). This will be used by Cell platforms using 4xx-type IOs in the Axon bridge and can be used by any embedded-type device as well. * [POWERPC] Xserve G5 thermal control fixesBenjamin Herrenschmidt2006-07-071-15/+203
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | The thermal control for the Xserve G5s had a few issues. For one, the way to program the RPM fans speeds into the FCU is different between it and the desktop models, which I didn't figure out until recently, and it was missing a control loop for the slots fan, running it too fast. Both of those problems were causing the machine to be much more noisy than necessary. This patch also changes the fixed value of the slots fan for desktop G5s to 40% instead of 50%. It seems to still have a pretty good airflow that way and is much less noisy. Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Signed-off-by: Paul Mackerras <paulus@samba.org>

* | [PATCH] I2C: Remove .owner setting from i2c_driver as it's no longer neededGreg Kroah-Hartman2006-01-051-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Now that i2c_add_driver() doesn't need the module owner to be set by hand, we can delete it from the drivers. This patch catches all of the drivers that I found in the current tree (if a driver sets the .owner by hand, it's not a problem, just not needed.) * | [PATCH] i2c: Drop i2c_driver.flags, 2 of 3Jean Delvare2006-01-051-1/+0
|/ | | | | | | | | | | Just about every i2c chip driver sets the I2C_DF_NOTIFY flag, so we can simply make it the default and drop the flag. If any driver really doesn't want to be notified when i2c adapters are added, that driver can simply omit to set .attach_adapter. This approach is also more robust as it prevents accidental NULL pointer dereferences. Signed-off-by: Jean Delvare <khali@linux-fr.org> Signed-off-by: Greg Kroah-Hartman <gregkh@suse.de>
* [PATCH] powerpc: more g5 overtemp problem fixBenjamin Herrenschmidt2006-01-021-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Some G5s still occasionally experience shutdowns due to overtemp conditions despite the recent fix. After analyzing logs from such machines, it appears that the overtemp code is a bit too quick at shutting the machine down when reaching the critical temperature (tmax + 8) and doesn't leave the fan enough time to actually cool it down. This happens if the temperature of a CPU suddenly rises too high in a very short period of time, or occasionally on boot (that is the CPUs are already overtemp by the time the driver loads). This patches makes the code a bit more relaxed, leaving a few seconds to the fans to do their job before kicking the machine shutown. * [PATCH] powerpc: g5 thermal overtemp bugBenjamin Herrenschmidt2005-12-201-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The g5 thermal control for liquid cooled machines has a small bug, when the temperatures gets too high, it boosts all fans to the max, but incorrectly sets the liquids pump to the min instead of the max speed, thus causing the overtemp condition not to clear and the machine to shut down after a while. This fixes it to set the pumps to max speed instead. This problem might explain some of the reports of random shutdowns that some g5 users have been reporting in the past. Many thanks to Marcus Rothe for spending a lot of time trying various patches & sending log logs before I found out that typo. Note that overtemp handling is still not perfect and the machine might still shutdown, that patch should reduce if not eliminate such occcurences in "normal" conditions with high load. I'll implement a better handling with proper slowing down of the CPUs later. Signed-off-by: Benjamin Herrenschmidt <benh@kernel.crashing.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

* [PATCH] ppc64: SMU driver update & i2c supportBenjamin Herrenschmidt2005-09-221-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The SMU is the "system controller" chip used by Apple recent G5 machines including the iMac G5. It drives things like fans, i2c busses, real time clock, etc... The current kernel contains a very crude driver that doesn't do much more than reading the real time clock synchronously. This is a completely rewritten driver that provides interrupt based command queuing, a userland interface, and an i2c/smbus driver for accessing the devices hanging off the SMU i2c busses like temperature sensors. This driver is a basic block for upcoming work on thermal control for those machines, among others. * [PATCH] openfirmware: generate device table for userspaceJeff Mahoney2005-07-061-5/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This converts the usage of struct of_match to struct of_device_id, similar to pci_device_id. This allows a device table to be generated, which can be parsed by depmod(8) to generate a map file for module loading. In order for hotplug to work with macio devices, patches to module-init-tools and hotplug must be applied. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
