|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This introduces CONFIG_GENERIC_FIND_BIT_LE to tell whether to use generic implementation of find_*_bit_le() in lib/find_next_bit.c or not. For now we select CONFIG_GENERIC_FIND_BIT_LE for all architectures which enable CONFIG_GENERIC_FIND_NEXT_BIT. But m68knommu wants to define own faster find_next_zero_bit_le() and continues using generic find_next_{,zero_}bit(). |/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Impact: cleanup Each SMP arch defines these themselves. Move them to a central location. Twists: 1) Some archs (m32, parisc, s390) set possible_map to all 1, so we add a CONFIG_INIT_ALL_POSSIBLE for this rather than break them. 2) mips and sparc32 '#define cpu_possible_map phys_cpu_present_map'. Those archs simply have phys_cpu_present_map replaced everywhere. 3) Alpha defined cpu_possible_map to cpu_present_map; this is tricky so I just manipulate them both in sync. 4) IA64, cris and m32r have gratuitous 'extern cpumask_t cpu_possible_map' declarations. * container freezer: implement freezer cgroup subsystemMatt Helsley2008-10-201-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch implements a new freezer subsystem in the control groups framework. It provides a way to stop and resume execution of all tasks in a cgroup by writing in the cgroup filesystem. The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a file named freezer.state. Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks in the cgroup. Subsequently writing "RUNNING" will unfreeze the tasks in the cgroup. Reading will return the current state. * Examples of usage : # mkdir /containers/freezer # mount -t cgroup -ofreezer freezer /containers # mkdir /containers/0 # echo $some_pid > /containers/0/tasks to get status of the freezer subsystem : # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING to freeze all tasks in the container : # echo FROZEN > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FREEZING # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FROZEN to unfreeze all tasks in the container : # echo RUNNING > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING This is the basic mechanism which should do the right thing for user space task in a simple scenario. It's important to note that freezing can be incomplete. In that case we return EBUSY. This means that some tasks in the cgroup are busy doing something that prevents us from completely freezing the cgroup at this time. After EBUSY, the cgroup will remain partially frozen -- reflected by freezer.state reporting "FREEZING" when read. The state will remain "FREEZING" until one of these things happens: 1) Userspace cancels the freezing operation by writing "RUNNING" to the freezer.state file 2) Userspace retries the freezing operation by writing "FROZEN" to the freezer.state file (writing "FREEZING" is not legal and returns EIO) 3) The tasks that blocked the cgroup from entering the "FROZEN" state disappear from the cgroup's set of tasks. * avoid overflows in kernel/time.cH. Peter Anvin2008-02-081-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When the conversion factor between jiffies and milli- or microseconds is not a single multiply or divide, as for the case of HZ == 300, we currently do a multiply followed by a divide. The intervening result, however, is subject to overflows, especially since the fraction is not simplified (for HZ == 300, we multiply by 300 and divide by 1000). This is exposed to the user when passing a large timeout to poll(), for example. This patch replaces the multiply-divide with a reciprocal multiplication on 32-bit platforms. When the input is an unsigned long, there is no portable way to do this on 64-bit platforms there is no portable way to do this since it requires a 128-bit intermediate result (which gcc does support on 64-bit platforms but may generate libgcc calls, e.g. on 64-bit s390), but since the output is a 32-bit integer in the cases affected, just simplify the multiply-divide (*3/10 instead of *300/1000). The reciprocal multiply used can have off-by-one errors in the upper half of the valid output range. This could be avoided at the expense of having to deal with a potential 65-bit intermediate result. Since the intent is to avoid overflow problems and most of the other time conversions are only semiexact, the off-by-one errors were considered an acceptable tradeoff. At Ralf Baechle's suggestion, this version uses a Perl script to compute the necessary constants. We already have dependencies on Perl for kernel compiles. This does, however, require the Perl module Math::BigInt, which is included in the standard Perl distribution starting with version 5.8.0. In order to support older versions of Perl, include a table of canned constants in the script itself, and structure the script so that Math::BigInt isn't required if pulling values from said table. Running the script requires that the HZ value is available from the Makefile. Thus, this patch also adds the Kconfig variable CONFIG_HZ to the architectures which didn't already have it (alpha, cris, frv, h8300, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, sparc, v850, and xtensa.) It does *not* touch the sh or sh64 architectures, since Paul Mundt has dealt with those separately in the sh tree. Signed-off-by: H. It would be much better to do depends on ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES in that generic file, and then architectures that do support it would just have a bool ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES default y in *their* architecture files. That would seem to be much more logical, and is readable both for arch maintainers *and* for people who have no clue - and don't care - about which architecture is supposed to support which interface... Put all of that under CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK, and introduce a __raw_spin_is_contended that uses the lock data itself to determine whether there are waiters on the lock, to be used if CONFIG_GENERIC_LOCKBREAK is not set. Rename need_lockbreak to spin_needbreak, make it use spin_is_contended to decouple it from the spinlock implementation, and make it typesafe (rwlocks do not have any need_lockbreak sites -- why do they even get bloated up with that break_lock then?). * m32r: fix switch_to macro to push/pop frame pointer if neededHirokazu Takata2007-05-111-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch fixes a rarely-happened but severe scheduling problem of the recent m32r kernel of 2.6.17-rc3 or later. In the following previous m32r patch, the switch_to macro was modified not to do unnecessary push/pop operations for tuning. > [PATCH] m32r: update switch_to macro for tuning > 4127272c38619c56f0c1aa01d01c7bd757db70a1 In this modification, only 'lr' and 'sp' registers are push/pop'ed, assuming that the m32r kernel is always compiled with -fomit-frame-pointer option. However, in 2.6 kernel, kernel/sched.c is irregularly compiled with -fno-omit-frame-pointer if CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER is not defined. -- kernel/Makefile -- : ifneq ($(CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER),y) # According to Alan Modra <alan@linuxcare.com.au>, the -fno-omit-frame-pointer is # needed for x86 only. Why this used to be enabled for all architectures is beyond # me. I suspect most platforms don't need this, but until we know that for sure # I turn this off for IA-64 only. Andreas Schwab says it's also needed on m68k # to get a correct value for the wait-channel (WCHAN in ps). --davidm CFLAGS_sched.o := $(PROFILING) -fno-omit-frame-pointer endif : --- Therefore, for the recent m32r kernel, we have to push/pop 'fp' (frame pointer) if CONFIG_FRAME_POINTER is defined or CONFIG_SCHED_NO_NO_OMIT_FRAME_POINTER is not defined. * [PATCH] sort the devres mess outAl Viro2007-02-111-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | * Split the implementation-agnostic stuff in separate files. * Make sure that targets using non-default request_irq() pull kernel/irq/devres.o * Introduce new symbols (HAS_IOPORT and HAS_IOMEM) defaulting to positive; allow architectures to turn them off (we needed these symbols anyway for dependencies of quite a few drivers). * protect the ioport-related parts of lib/devres.o with CONFIG_HAS_IOPORT. * [PATCH] Set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for arches with GENERIC_ISA_DMAChristoph Lameter2007-02-111-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As Andi pointed out: CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA only disables the ISA DMA channel management. Other functionality may still expect GFP_DMA to provide memory below 16M. So we need to make sure that CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is set independent of CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA. Undo the modifications to mm/Kconfig where we made ZONE_DMA dependent on GENERIC_ISA_DMA and set theses explicitly in each arches Kconfig. Reviews must occur for each arch in order to determine if ZONE_DMA can be switched off. It can only be switched off if we know that all devices supported by a platform are capable of performing DMA transfers to all of memory (Some arches already support this: uml, avr32, sh sh64, parisc and IA64/Altix). In order to switch ZONE_DMA off conditionally, one would have to establish a scheme by which one can assure that no drivers are enabled that are only capable of doing I/O to a part of memory, or one needs to provide an alternate means of performing an allocation from a specific range of memory (like provided by alloc_pages_range()) and insure that all drivers use that call. In that case the arches alloc_dma_coherent() may need to be modified to call alloc_pages_range() instead of relying on GFP_DMA. * [PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells2006-12-081-0/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. * [PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFTYasunori Goto2006-04-111-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5 NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy. SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's number. This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary. On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2 config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It would be simpler. * [PATCH] "tiny-make-id16-support-optional" fixesAdrian Bunk2006-01-101-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It seems the "make UID16 support optional" patch was checked when it edited the -tiny tree some time ago, but it wasn't checked whether it still matches the current situation when it was submitted for inclusion in -mm. This patch fixes the following bugs: - ARCH_S390X does no longer exist, nowadays this has to be expressed through (S390 && 64BIT) - in five architecture specific Kconfig files the UID16 options weren't removed Additionally, it changes the fragile negative dependencies of UID16 to positive dependencies (new architectures are more likely to not require UID16 support). * [LIB]: Consolidate _atomic_dec_and_lock()David S. Miller2005-09-141-5/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | Several implementations were essentialy a common piece of C code using the cmpxchg() macro. Put the implementation in one spot that everyone can share, and convert sparc64 over to using this. Alpha is the lone arch-specific implementation, which codes up a special fast path for the common case in order to avoid GP reloading which a pure C version would require. Signed-off-by: David S. * [PATCH] Remove even more stale references to Documentation/smp.texArthur Othieno2005-09-101-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Randy cleaned out the bulk of these stale references to the now long gone Documentation/smp.tex back in 2004. I followed this up with a few more sweeps. * [NET]: add a top-level Networking menu to *configSam Ravnborg2005-07-111-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Create a new top-level menu named "Networking" thus moving net related options and protocol selection way from the drivers menu and up on the top-level where they belong. To implement this all architectures has to source "net/Kconfig" before drivers/*/Kconfig in their Kconfig file. This change has been implemented for all architectures. Device drivers for ordinary NIC's are still to be found in the Device Drivers section, but Bluetooth, IrDA and ax25 are located with their corresponding menu entries under the new networking menu item. * [PATCH] make each arch use mm/KconfigDave Hansen2005-06-231-1/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | For all architectures, this just means that you'll see a "Memory Model" choice in your architecture menu. For those that implement DISCONTIGMEM, you may eventually want to make your ARCH_DISCONTIGMEM_ENABLE a "def_bool y" and make your users select DISCONTIGMEM right out of the new choice menu. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
