the sort keys were used). Add more help tips and show randomly.

Move the subcommand-related files from perf to a new library named
libsubcmd.a.
Since we're moving files anyway, go ahead and rename 'exec_cmd.*' to
'exec-cmd.*' to be consistent with the naming of all the other files.

Create init functions for exec_cmd.c and pager.c. This allows their
configuration to be specified at runtime so they can be split out into a
separate library which can be used by other programs. Their
configuration is stored in a shared subcmd_config struct.

perf_env__set_cmdline() only saves the arguments the first time it's
called. It doesn't need to be called every time the options and
suboptions are parsed. Instead it can just be called once.
This also has the advantage of making the option parsing code less
perf-specific so it can be moved out to a library.

The perf configuration file contains many variables to change various
aspects of each of its tools, including output, disk usage, etc.
But looking at the state of configuration is difficult and there's no
documentation about config variables except for the variables in
perfconfig.example exist.
So this patch adds a 'perf-config' command with a '--list' option.
perf config [options]

By introducing new rules in tools/perf/util/parse-events.[ly], this
patch enables 'perf record --event bpf_file.o' to select events by an
eBPF object file. It calls parse_events_load_bpf() to load that file,
which uses bpf__prepare_load() and finally calls bpf_object__open() for
the object files.
After applying this patch, commands like:
# perf record --event foo.o sleep
become possible.
However, at this point it is unable to link any useful things onto the
evsel list because the creating of probe points and BPF program
attaching have not been implemented. Before real events are possible to
be extracted, to avoid perf report error because of empty evsel list,
this patch link a dummy evsel. The dummy event related code will be
removed when probing and extracting code is ready.
Commiter notes:

Out of the code to write the cpu topology map in the perf.data file
header.
Now if one needs the CPU topology map for the running machine, one needs
to call perf_env__read_cpu_topology_map(perf_env) and the info will be
stored in perf_env.cpu.
For now we're using a global perf_env variable, that will have its
contents freed after we run a builtin.
v2: Check perf_env__read_cpu_topology_map() return in
write_cpu_topology() (Kan Liang)

The perf-completion.sh uses a predefined string '--help --version
--exec-path --html-path --paginate --no-pager --perf-dir --work-tree
--debugfs-dir' for the bash completion of 'perf --*', which has two
problems:
Problem 1: If the options of perf are changed (see handle_options() in
perf.c), the perf-completion.sh has to be changed at the same time. If
not, the bash completion of 'perf --*' and the options which perf
really supports will be inconsistent.
Problem 2: When typing another single character after 'perf --', e.g.
'h', and hit TAB key to get the bash completion of 'perf --h', the
character 'h' disappears at once. This is not what we want, we wish the
bash completion can return '--help --html-path' and then we can
continue to choose one.
To solve this problem, we add '--list-opts' to perf, which now supports
'perf --list-opts' directly, and its result can be used in bash
completion now.
Example:
Before this patch:
$ perf --h <-- hit TAB key after character 'h'
$ perf -- <-- 'h' disappears and no required result
After this patch:
$ perf --h <-- hit TAB key after character 'h'
--help --html-path <-- the required result

Adding --debug option as a way to setup debug variables. Starting with
support for verbose, more will come.
It's possible to use it now with report command:
$ perf --debug verbose ...
$ perf --debug verbose=2 ...
I'll need this support to add separated debug variable for ordered

When the audit-libs devel package is not found at build time we disable
the 'trace' command, as we are not able to map syscall numbers to
strings, but then the message the user is presented is cryptic:

Move debugfs.* to api/fs/. We have a common tools/lib/api/ place where
the Makefile lives and then we place the headers in subdirs.
For example, all the fs-related stuff goes to tools/lib/api/fs/ from
which we get libapikfs.a (acme got almost the naming he wanted :-)) and
we link it into the tools which need it - in this case perf and
tools/vm/page-types.
acme:
"Looking at the implementation, I think some tools can even link
directly to the .o files, avoiding the .a file altogether.
But that is just an optimization/finer granularity tools/lib/
cherrypicking that toolers can make use of."

Add config option for launching GTK browser for the specified command by

Adding following line to the perfconfig file will have a same effect of
specifying --gtk option on command line (unless other related options
are not given).

The idea is run perf session with kidnapping sys_perf_event_open
function. For each sys_perf_event_open call we store the perf_event_attr
data to the file to be checked later against what we expect.
You can run this by:
$ python ./tests/attr.py -d ./tests/attr/ -p ./perf -v

- preserve errno value in the hook

Currently many perf commands annotate/evlist/report/script/lock etc all
support "-i" option to chose a specific perf data, and all of them
create a local "input_name" to save the file name for that perf data.
Since most of these commands need it, we can add a global variable for
it, also it can some other benefits:
1. When calling script browser inside hists/annotation browser, it needs
to know the perf data file name to run that script.
2. For further feature like runtime switching to another perf data file,
this variable can also help.

For building perf without libaudit, we can set NO_LIBAUDIT=1 as a
argument of make. It then defines NO_LIBAUDIT_SUPPORT macro for C code
to do the proper handling. However it usually used in a negative
semantics - e.g. #ifndef - so we saw double negations which can be
misleading. Convert it to a positive form to make it more readable.

The newly added trace command requires an external audit library.
However it can cause a build error because it's not checked whether the
libaudit is installed on system:

Initially should look loosely like the venerable 'strace' tool, but
using the infrastructure in the perf tools to allow tracing extra
targets:
[acme@sandy linux]$ perf trace --hell
Error: unknown option `hell'
usage: perf trace <PID>
-p, --pid <pid> trace events on existing process id
--tid <tid> trace events on existing thread id
--all-cpus system-wide collection from all CPUs
--cpu <cpu> list of cpus to monitor
--no-inherit child tasks do not inherit counters
--mmap-pages <n> number of mmap data pages
--uid <user> user to profile
[acme@sandy linux]$
Those should have the same semantics as when using with 'perf record'.
It gets stuck sometimes, but hey, it works sometimes too!
In time it should support perf.data based workloads, i.e. it should have
a:
-o filename
Command line option that will produce a perf.data file that can then be
used with 'perf trace' or any of the other perf tools (script, report,
etc).
It will also eventually have the set of functionalities described in the
previous 'trace' prototype by Thomas Gleixner:
"Announcing a new utility: 'trace'"
http://lwn.net/Articles/415728/
Also planned is to have some of the features suggested in the comments
of that LWN article.

Now we have isolated all ELF-specific stuff, it's possible to build
without libelf. The output binary can do most of jobs but lacks (user
level) symbol information - kernel symbols are still accessable thanks
to the kallsyms.
To build perf without libelf (elfutils), give NO_LIBELF=1 to make.
For now, only 'perf probe' command is removed since it depends on
libelf/libdw heavily.

We don't need to have two PATH_MAX char sized arrays holding it, just
one in util/debugfs.c will do.
Also rename debugfs_path to tracing_events_path, as it is not the path
to debugfs, that is debugfs_mountpoint. Both are now accessible.
This will allow accessing this code in the perf python binding without
having to drag in perf.c and util/parse-events.c.
The defaults for these variables are the canonical "/sys/kernel/debug"
and "/sys/kernel/debug/tracing/events/", removing the need for simple
tools to call debugfs_mount(NULL).

To do that we needed to stop using newtForm, as we don't want libnewt to
catch the xterm resize signal.
Remove some more newt calls and instead use the underlying libslang
directly. In time tools/perf will use just libslang.

We need to defer calling perf_evsel_list__delete() till after atexit
registered routines, because we need to traverse the events being
recorded at that time at least on 'perf record'.
This fixes the problem reported by Thomas Renninger where cmd_record
called by cmd_timechart would not write the tracing data to the perf.data
file header because the evsel_list at atexit (control+C on 'perf timechart
record') time would be empty, being already deleted by run_builtin(),
and thus 'perf timechart' when trying to process such perf.data file would
die with:
"no trace data in the file"
Problem introduced in 70d544d.

Free the perf trace name space and rename the trace to 'script' which is a
better match for the scripting engine.

This patch adds the ability to specify an alternate directory to store the
buildid cache (buildids, copy of binaries). By default, it is hardcoded to
$HOME/.debug. This directory contains immutable data. The layout of the
directory is such that no conflicts in filenames are possible. A modification
in a file, yields a different buildid and thus a different location in the
subdir hierarchy.
You may want to put the buildid cache elsewhere because of disk space
limitation or simply to share the cache between users. It is also useful for
remote collect vs. local analysis of profiles.
This patch adds a new config option to the perfconfig file. Under the tag
'buildid', there is a dir option. For instance, if you have:
$ cat /etc/perfconfig
[buildid]
dir = /var/cache/perf-buildid
All buildids and binaries are be saved in the directory specified. The perf
record, buildid-list, buildid-cache, report, annotate, and archive commands
will it to pull information out.
The option can be set in the system-wide perfconfig file or in the
$HOME/.perfconfig file.

Using the same scheme as for git's/perf's pager setup, i.e. if one
doesn't want to, on a newt enabled perf binary, to disable the TUI for
'perf report', its just a matter of doing:
[root@doppio linux-2.6-tip]# printf "[tui]\n\nreport = off\n" >
/root/.perfconfig
[root@doppio linux-2.6-tip]# cat /root/.perfconfig
[tui]
report = off
[root@doppio linux-2.6-tip]#
System wide settings are also possible, by editing /etc/perfconfig, etc,
i.e. the git machinery for config files applies to perf as well, so when
in doubt where to put your settings, consult the git documentation, if
it fails, please let us know.
