* [PATCH] x86: ptep_clear optimizationZachary Amsden2005-09-051-0/+16
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add a new accessor for PTEs, which passes the full hint from the mmu_gather struct; this allows architectures with hardware pagetables to optimize away atomic PTE operations when destroying an address space. Removing the locked operation should allow better pipelining of memory access in this loop. I measured an average savings of 30-35 cycles per zap_pte_range on the first 500 destructions on Pentium-M, but I believe the optimization would win more on older processors which still assert the bus lock on xchg for an exclusive cacheline. Update: I made some new measurements, and this saves exactly 26 cycles over ptep_get_and_clear on Pentium M. On P4, with a PAE kernel, this saves 180 cycles per ptep_get_and_clear, for a whopping 92160 cycles savings for a full address space destruction. pte_clear_full is not yet used, but is provided for future optimizations (in particular, when running inside of a hypervisor that queues page table updates, the full hint allows us to avoid queueing unnecessary page table update for an address space in the process of being destroyed. This is not a huge win, but it does help a bit, and sets the stage for further hypervisor optimization of the mm layer on all architectures. * [PATCH] mm: consolidate get_orderStephen Rothwell2005-09-051-0/+26
| | | | | | | | | | | | Someone mentioned that almost all the architectures used basically the same implementation of get_order. This patch consolidates them into asm-generic/page.h and includes that in the appropriate places. The exceptions are ia64 and ppc which have their own (presumably optimised) versions. * [PATCH] pci and yenta: pcibios_bus_to_resourceDominik Brodowski2005-08-041-0/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In yenta_socket, we default to using the resource setting of the CardBus bridge. However, this is a PCI-bus-centric view of resources and thus needs to be converted to generic resources first. Therefore, add a call to pcibios_bus_to_resource() call in between. This function is a mere wrapper on x86 and friends, however on some others it already exists, is added in this patch (alpha, arm, ppc, ppc64) or still needs to be provided (parisc -- where is its pcibios_resource_to_bus() ?). * [PATCH] x86_64: Some cleanup in setup64.cAndi Kleen2005-07-281-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Minor cleanup. Move things into their include files, remove obsolete includes, fix indentation, remove obsolete special cases etc. I also added the per cpu section to asm-generic/sections.h and fixed init/main.c to use it. * [PATCH] Add emergency_restart()Eric W. Biederman2005-07-261-0/+9
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When the kernel is working well and we want to restart cleanly kernel_restart is the function to use. But in many instances the kernel wants to reboot when thing are expected to be working very badly such as from panic or a software watchdog handler. This patch adds the function emergency_restart() so that callers can be clear what semantics they expect when calling restart. emergency_restart() is expected to be callable from interrupt context and possibly reliable in even more trying circumstances. This is an initial generic implementation for all architectures. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] kexec: vmlinux: fix physical addressesEric W. Biederman2005-06-251-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In vmlinux.lds.h the code is carefull to define every section so vmlinux properly reports the correct physical load address of code, as well as it's virtual address. The new SECURITY_INIT definition fails to follow that convention and and causes incorrect physical address to appear in the vmlinux if there are any security initcalls. This patch updates the SECURITY_INIT to follow the convention in the rest of the file. * [PATCH] adjust per_cpu definition in non-SMP caseJan Beulich2005-06-231-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | Fix (in the architectures I'm actually building for) the UP definition of per_cpu so that the cpu specified may be any expression, not just an identifier or a suffix expression. * [PATCH] x86/x86_64: pcibus_to_nodeChristoph Lameter2005-06-231-1/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Define pcibus_to_node to be able to figure out which NUMA node contains a given PCI device. This defines pcibus_to_node(bus) in include/linux/topology.h and adjusts the macros for i386 and x86_64 that already provided a way to determine the cpumask of a pci device. x86_64 was changed to not build an array of cpumasks anymore. Instead an array of nodes is build which can be used to generate the cpumask via node_to_cpumask. * [PATCH] msync: check pte dirty earlierAbhijit Karmarkar2005-06-211-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It's common practice to msync a large address range regularly, in which often only a few ptes have actually been dirtied since the previous pass. sync_pte_range then goes much faster if it tests whether pte is dirty before locating and accessing each struct page cacheline; and it is hardly slowed by ptep_clear_flush_dirty repeating that test in the opposite case, when every pte actually is dirty. But beware, s390's pte_dirty always says false, since its dirty bit is kept in the storage key, located via the struct page address. So skip this optimization in its case: use a pte_maybe_dirty macro which just says true if page_test_and_clear_dirty is implemented. * [PATCH] ppc32: platform-specific functions missing from kallsyms.David Woodhouse2005-05-051-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The PPC32 kernel puts platform-specific functions into separate sections so that unneeded parts of it can be freed when we've booted and actually worked out what we're running on today. This makes kallsyms ignore those functions, because they're not between _[se]text or _[se]inittext. Rather than teaching kallsyms about the various pmac/chrp/etc sections, this patch adds '_[se]extratext' markers for kallsyms. * [PATCH] asm/signal.h unificationAl Viro2005-05-041-0/+21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | New file - asm-generic/signal.h. Contains declarations of __sighandler_t, __sigrestore_t, SIG_DFL, SIG_IGN, SIG_ERR and default definitions of SIG_BLOCK, SIG_UNBLOCK and SIG_SETMASK. asm-*/signal.h switched to including it. The only exception is asm-parisc/signal.h that wants its own declaration of __sighandler_t; that one is left as-is. asm-ppc64/signal.h required one more thing - unlike everybody else it used __sigrestorer_t instead of usual __sigrestore_t. PPC64 switched to common spelling. Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@parcelfarce.linux.theplanet.co.uk> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>
* [PATCH] consolidate SIGEV_PAD_SIZEStephen Rothwell2005-05-011-3/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Discussing with Matthew Wilcox some of his outstanding patches lead me to this patch (among others). The preamble in struct sigevent can be expressed independently of the architecture. Also use __ARCH_SI_PREAMBLE_SIZE on ia64. * [PATCH] add EOWNERDEAD and ENOTRECOVERABLE version 2Joe Korty2005-05-011-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Add EOWNERDEAD and ENOTRECOVERABLE to all architectures. This is to support the upcoming patches for robust mutexes. We normally don't reserve parts of the name/number space for external patches, but robust mutexes are sufficiently popular and important to justify it in this case. * [PATCH] nice and rt-prio rlimitsMatt Mackall2005-05-011-1/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add a pair of rlimits for allowing non-root tasks to raise nice and rt priorities. Defaults to traditional behavior. Originally written by Chris Wright. The patch implements a simple rlimit ceiling for the RT (and nice) priorities a task can set. The rlimit defaults to 0, meaning no change in behavior by default. A value of 50 means RT priority levels 1-50 are allowed. A value of 100 means all 99 privilege levels from 1 to 99 are allowed. CAP_SYS_NICE is blanket permission. (akpm: see http://www.uwsg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/0503.1/1921.html for tips on integrating this with PAM). * [PATCH] __get_unaligned() turned into macroAl Viro2005-04-241-41/+42
| | | | | | | | | | Turns __get_unaligned() and __put_unaligned into macros. That is definitely safe; leaving them as inlines breaks on e.g. alpha [try to build ncpfs there and you'll get unresolved symbols since we end up getting __get_unaligned() not inlined]. * [PATCH] freepgt: remove arch pgd_addr_endHugh Dickins2005-04-191-5/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | ia64 and sparc64 hurriedly had to introduce their own variants of pgd_addr_end, to leapfrog over the holes in their virtual address spaces which the final clear_page_range suddenly presented when converted from pgd_index to pgd_addr_end. But now that free_pgtables respects the vma list, those holes are never presented, and the arch variants can go. * [PATCH] add Big Endian variants of ioread/iowriteJames Bottomley2005-04-161-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | In the new io infrastructure, all of our operators are expecting the underlying device to be little endian (because the PCI bus, their main consumer, is LE). However, there are a fair few devices and busses in the world that are actually Big Endian. There's even evidence that some of these BE bus and chip types are attached to LE systems. Thus, there's a need for a BE equivalent of our io{read,write}{16,32} operations. The attached patch adds this as io{read,write}{16,32}be. When it's in, I'll add the first consume (the 53c700 SCSI chip driver). * Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds2005-04-1632-0/+3416
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
