Support for the PMU's BTS features has been upstreamed in
v2.6.32, but we still have the old and disabled ptrace-BTS,
as Linus noticed it not so long ago.
It's buggy: TIF_DEBUGCTLMSR is trampling all over that MSR without
regard for other uses (perf) and doesn't provide the flexibility
needed for perf either.
Its users are ptrace-block-step and ptrace-bts, since ptrace-bts
was never used and ptrace-block-step can be implemented using a
much simpler approach.
So axe all 3000 lines of it. That includes the *locked_memory*()
APIs in mm/mlock.c as well.

The branch profiling creates very complex code for each if
statement, to the point that gcc has trouble even analyzing
something as simple as
if (count > 5)
count = 5;
This then means that causing an error on code that gcc cannot
analyze for copy_from_user() and co is not very productive.
This patch excludes the strict copy checks in the case of branch
profiling being enabled.

Add a user-space selftest of x86 instruction decoder at kernel build
time.
When CONFIG_X86_DECODER_SELFTEST=y, Kbuild builds a test harness of x86
instruction decoder and performs it after building vmlinux.
The test compares the results of objdump and x86 instruction decoder
code and check there are no differences.

This Kconfig option is intended to enable various code paths or
parameters in IOMMU implementations to stress test the code and/or the
hardware. This can also be done by disabling optimizations in the code
when this option is switched on.

IOMMU_LEAK, GART's own feature, dumps the used IOMMU entries when
IOMMU entries is full, which might be useful to find a bad driver that
eats IOMMU entries.
DMA_API_DEBUG provides the similar feature, debug_dma_dump_mappings,
and it's better than GART's IOMMU_LEAK feature. GART's IOMMU_LEAK
feature doesn't say who uses IOMMU entries so it's hard to find a bad
driver.
This patch reimplements the GART's IOMMU_LEAK feature by using
DMA_API_DEBUG.

CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is now supported by x86, powerpc, sparc64, and
s390. This patch implements it for the rest of the architectures by
filling the pages with poison byte patterns after free_pages() and
verifying the poison patterns before alloc_pages().
This generic one cannot detect invalid page accesses immediately but
invalid read access may cause invalid dereference by poisoned memory and
invalid write access can be detected after a long delay.

Impact: cosmetic change in Kconfig menu layout
This patch was originally suggested by Peter Zijlstra, but seems it
was forgotten.
CONFIG_MMIOTRACE and CONFIG_MMIOTRACE_TEST were selectable
directly under the Kernel hacking / debugging menu in the kernel
configuration system. They were present only for x86 and x86_64.
Other tracers that use the ftrace tracing framework are in their own
sub-menu. This patch moves the mmiotrace configuration options there.
Since the Kconfig file, where the tracer menu is, is not architecture
specific, HAVE_MMIOTRACE_SUPPORT is introduced and provided only by
x86/x86_64. CONFIG_MMIOTRACE now depends on it.

The x86/Voyager subarch used to have this distinction between
'x86 SMP support' and 'Voyager SMP support':
config X86_SMP
bool
depends on SMP && ((X86_32 && !X86_VOYAGER) || X86_64)
This is a pointless distinction - Voyager can (and already does) use
smp_ops to implement various SMP quirks it has - and it can be extended
more to cover all the specialities of Voyager.
So remove this complication in the Kconfig space.

Impact: clarify Kconfig help text
The OPTIMIZE_INLINING help currently says "The gcc 4.x series have a
rewritten inlining algorithm and disabling this option will generate a
smaller kernel there."
This contradicts other parts of the help text and my own tests:
5463127 2008-10-11 19:51 vmlinux.no-opt
5456152 2008-10-11 19:56 vmlinux.opt
Reword text to say that enabling OPTIMIZE_INLINING will lead to smaller
kernels with gcc 4.x or later.

CONFIG_NONPROMISC_DEVMEM was a rather confusing name - but renaming it
to CONFIG_PROMISC_DEVMEM causes problems on architectures that do not
support this feature; this patch renames it to CONFIG_STRICT_DEVMEM,
so that architectures can opt-in into it.
( the polarity of the option is still the same as it was originally; it
needs to be for now to not break architectures that don't have the
infastructure yet to support this feature)

right ... lets rename this option. There should never be a negation
in config options.

is for another commit ;-) ]

here is a patch that makes mmiotrace work almost well within the tracing
framework. The patch applies on top of my previous patch. I have my own
output formatting in place now.
Summary of changes:
- fix the NULL dereference that was due to not calling tracing_reset()
- add print_line() callback into struct tracer
- implement print_line() for mmiotrace, producing up-to-spec text
- add my output header, but that is not really called in the right place
- rewrote the main structs in mmiotrace
- added two new trace entry types: TRACE_MMIO_RW and TRACE_MMIO_MAP
- made some functions in trace.c non-static
- check current==NULL in tracing_generic_entry_update()
- fix(?) comparison in trace_seq_printf()
Things seem to work fine except a few issues. Markers (text lines injected
into mmiotrace log) are missing, I did not feel hacking them in before we
have variable length entries. My output header is printed only for 'trace'
file, but not 'trace_pipe'. For some reason, despite my quick fix,
iter->trace is NULL in print_trace_line() when called from 'trace_pipe'
file, which means I don't get proper output formatting.
I only tried by loading nouveau.ko, which just detects the card, and that
is traced fine. I didn't try further. Map, two reads and unmap. Works
perfectly.
I am missing the information about overflows, I'd prefer to have a
counter for lost events. I didn't try, but I guess currently there is no
way of knowning when it overflows?
So, not too far from being fully operational, it seems :-)
And looking at the diffstat, there also is some 700-900 lines of user space
code that just became obsolete.

Mmiotrace is a tool for trapping memory mapped IO (MMIO) accesses within
the kernel. It is used for debugging and especially for reverse
engineering evil binary drivers.
Mmiotrace works by wrapping the ioremap family of kernel functions and
marking the returned pages as not present. Access to the IO memory
triggers a page fault, which will be handled by mmiotrace's custom page
fault handler. This will single-step the faulted instruction with the
MMIO page marked as present. Access logs are directed to user space via
relay and debug_fs.
This page fault approach is necessary, because binary drivers have
readl/writel etc. calls inlined and therefore extremely difficult to
trap with with e.g. kprobes.
This patch depends on the custom page fault handlers patch.

Provides kernel modules a way to register custom page fault handlers.
On every page fault this will call a list of registered functions. The
functions may handle the fault and force do_page_fault() to return
immediately.
This functionality is similar to the now removed page fault notifiers.
Custom page fault handlers are used by debugging and reverse engineering
tools. Mmiotrace is one such tool and a patch to add it into the tree
will follow.
The custom page fault handlers are called earlier in do_page_fault()
than the page fault notifiers were.

* Introduce a new PER_CPU macro called "EARLY_PER_CPU". This is
used by some per_cpu variables that are initialized and accessed
before there are per_cpu areas allocated.
["Early" in respect to per_cpu variables is "earlier than the per_cpu
areas have been setup".]
This patchset adds these new macros:
DEFINE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name, _initvalue)
EXPORT_EARLY_PER_CPU_SYMBOL(_name)
DECLARE_EARLY_PER_CPU(_type, _name)
early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)
early_per_cpu_map(_name, _idx)
early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu)
The DEFINE macro defines the per_cpu variable as well as the early
map and pointer. It also initializes the per_cpu variable and map
elements to "_initvalue". The early_* macros provide access to
the initial map (usually setup during system init) and the early
pointer. This pointer is initialized to point to the early map
but is then NULL'ed when the actual per_cpu areas are setup. After
that the per_cpu variable is the correct access to the variable.
The early_per_cpu() macro is not very efficient but does show how to
access the variable if you have a function that can be called both
"early" and "late". It tests the early ptr to be NULL, and if not
then it's still valid. Otherwise, the per_cpu variable is used
instead:
#define early_per_cpu(_name, _cpu) \
(early_per_cpu_ptr(_name) ? \
early_per_cpu_ptr(_name)[_cpu] : \
per_cpu(_name, _cpu))
A better method is to actually check the pointer manually. In the
case below, numa_set_node can be called both "early" and "late":
void __cpuinit numa_set_node(int cpu, int node)
{
int *cpu_to_node_map = early_per_cpu_ptr(x86_cpu_to_node_map);
if (cpu_to_node_map)
cpu_to_node_map[cpu] = node;
else
per_cpu(x86_cpu_to_node_map, cpu) = node;
}
* Add a flag "arch_provides_topology_pointers" that indicates pointers
to topology cpumask_t maps are available. Otherwise, use the function
returning the cpumask_t value. This is useful if cpumask_t set size
is very large to avoid copying data on to/off of the stack.
* The coverage of CONFIG_DEBUG_PER_CPU_MAPS has been increased while
the non-debug case has been optimized a bit.
* Remove an unreferenced compiler warning in drivers/base/topology.c
* Clean up #ifdef in setup.c
