* netlink: Rename pid to portid to avoid confusionEric W. Biederman2012-09-101-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | It is a frequent mistake to confuse the netlink port identifier with a process identifier. Try to reduce this confusion by renaming fields that hold port identifiers portid instead of pid. I have carefully avoided changing the structures exported to userspace to avoid changing the userspace API. I have successfully built an allyesconfig kernel with this change. Signed-off-by: "Eric W. * net: Move all of the network sysctls without a namespace into init_net.Eric W. Biederman2012-04-201-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This makes it clearer which sysctls are relative to your current network namespace. This makes it a little less error prone by not exposing sysctls for the initial network namespace in other namespaces. This is the same way we handle all of our other network interfaces to userspace and I can't honestly remember why we didn't do this for sysctls right from the start. Signed-off-by: Eric W. | * net: dont hold rtnl mutex during netlink dump callbacksEric Dumazet2011-05-021-4/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Four years ago, Patrick made a change to hold rtnl mutex during netlink dump callbacks. I believe it was a wrong move. This slows down concurrent dumps, making good old /proc/net/ files faster than rtnetlink in some situations. This occurred to me because one "ip link show dev ..." was _very_ slow on a workload adding/removing network devices in background. All dump callbacks are able to use RCU locking now, so this patch does roughly a revert of commits : 1c2d670f366 : [RTNETLINK]: Hold rtnl_mutex during netlink dump callbacks 6313c1e0992 : [RTNETLINK]: Remove unnecessary locking in dump callbacks This let writers fight for rtnl mutex and readers going full speed. It also takes care of phonet : phonet_route_get() is now called from rcu read section. | * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-301-0/+1

Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. * netlink: change nlmsg_notify() return value logicPablo Neira Ayuso2009-02-241-1/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch changes the return value of nlmsg_notify() as follows: If NETLINK_BROADCAST_ERROR is set by any of the listeners and an error in the delivery happened, return the broadcast error; else if there are no listeners apart from the socket that requested a change with the echo flag, return the result of the unicast notification. Thus, with this patch, the unicast notification is handled in the same way of a broadcast listener that has set the NETLINK_BROADCAST_ERROR socket flag. This patch is useful in case that the caller of nlmsg_notify() wants to know the result of the delivery of a netlink notification (including the broadcast delivery) and take any action in case that the delivery failed. For example, ctnetlink can drop packets if the event delivery failed to provide reliable logging and state-synchronization at the cost of dropping packets. This patch also modifies the rtnetlink code to ignore the return value of rtnl_notify() in all callers. The function rtnl_notify() (before this patch) returned the error of the unicast notification which makes rtnl_set_sk_err() reports errors to all listeners. This is not of any help since the origin of the change (the socket that requested the echoing) notices the ENOBUFS error if the notification fails and should resync itself. * [NET]: Make the loopback device per network namespace.Eric W. Biederman2007-10-101-2/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch makes loopback_dev per network namespace. Adding code to create a different loopback device for each network namespace and adding the code to free a loopback device when a network namespace exits. This patch modifies all users the loopback_dev so they access it as init_net.loopback_dev, keeping all of the code compiling and working. A later pass will be needed to update the users to use something other than the initial network namespace. Signed-off-by: Eric W. Biederman <ebiederm@xmission.com> Signed-off-by: David S. * [NET]: Make the device list and device lookups per namespace.Eric W. Biederman2007-10-101-10/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch makes most of the generic device layer network namespace safe. This patch makes dev_base_head a network namespace variable, and then it picks up a few associated variables. The functions: dev_getbyhwaddr dev_getfirsthwbytype dev_get_by_flags dev_get_by_name __dev_get_by_name dev_get_by_index __dev_get_by_index dev_ioctl dev_ethtool dev_load wireless_process_ioctl were modified to take a network namespace argument, and deal with it. vlan_ioctl_set and brioctl_set were modified so their hooks will receive a network namespace argument. So basically anthing in the core of the network stack that was affected to by the change of dev_base was modified to handle multiple network namespaces. The rest of the network stack was simply modified to explicitly use &init_net the initial network namespace. This can be fixed when those components of the network stack are modified to handle multiple network namespaces. For now the ifindex generator is left global. Fundametally ifindex numbers are per namespace, or else we will have corner case problems with migration when we get that far. At the same time there are assumptions in the network stack that the ifindex of a network device won't change. Making the ifindex number global seems a good compromise until the network stack can cope with ifindex changes when you change namespaces, and the like. Signed-off-by: Eric W. * [NET]: Make /proc/net per network namespaceEric W. Biederman2007-10-101-2/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch makes /proc/net per network namespace. It modifies the global variables proc_net and proc_net_stat to be per network namespace. The proc_net file helpers are modified to take a network namespace argument, and all of their callers are fixed to pass &init_net for that argument. This ensures that all of the /proc/net files are only visible and usable in the initial network namespace until the code behind them has been updated to be handle multiple network namespaces. Making /proc/net per namespace is necessary as at least some files in /proc/net depend upon the set of network devices which is per network namespace, and even more files in /proc/net have contents that are relevant to a single network namespace.
