* | BKL: Remove BKL from ext2 filesystemJan Blunck2010-10-041-4/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The BKL is still used in ext2_put_super(), ext2_fill_super(), ext2_sync_fs() ext2_remount() and ext2_write_inode(). From these calls ext2_put_super(), ext2_fill_super() and ext2_remount() are protected against each other by the struct super_block s_umount rw semaphore. The call in ext2_write_inode() could only protect the modification of the ext2_sb_info through ext2_update_dynamic_rev() against concurrent ext2_sync_fs() or ext2_remount(). ext2_fill_super() and ext2_put_super() can be left out because you need a valid filesystem reference in all three cases, which you do not have when you are one of these functions. If the BKL is only protecting the modification of the ext2_sb_info it can safely be removed since this is protected by the struct ext2_sb_info s_lock. * | BKL: Explicitly add BKL around get_sb/fill_superJan Blunck2010-10-041-2/+8
|/ | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch is a preparation necessary to remove the BKL from do_new_mount(). It explicitly adds calls to lock_kernel()/unlock_kernel() around get_sb/fill_super operations for filesystems that still uses the BKL. I've read through all the code formerly covered by the BKL inside do_kern_mount() and have satisfied myself that it doesn't need the BKL any more. do_kern_mount() is already called without the BKL when mounting the rootfs and in nfsctl. do_kern_mount() calls vfs_kern_mount(), which is called from various places without BKL: simple_pin_fs(), nfs_do_clone_mount() through nfs_follow_mountpoint(), afs_mntpt_do_automount() through afs_mntpt_follow_link(). Both later functions are actually the filesystems follow_link inode operation. vfs_kern_mount() is calling the specified get_sb function and lets the filesystem do its job by calling the given fill_super function. Therefore I think it is safe to push down the BKL from the VFS to the low-level filesystems get_sb/fill_super operation. [arnd: do not add the BKL to those file systems that already don't use it elsewhere] Signed-off-by: Jan Blunck <jblunck@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Cc: Matthew Wilcox <matthew@wil.cx> Cc: Christoph Hellwig <hch@infradead.org>
* mbcache: Remove unused featuresAndreas Gruenbacher2010-08-091-7/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | The mbcache code was written to support a variable number of indexes, but all the existing users use exactly one index. Simplify to code to support only that case. There are also no users of the cache entry free operation, and none of the users keep extra data in cache entries. Remove those features as well. * check ATTR_SIZE contraints in inode_change_okChristoph Hellwig2010-08-091-10/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Make sure we check the truncate constraints early on in ->setattr by adding those checks to inode_change_ok. Also clean up and document inode_change_ok to make this obvious. As a fallout we don't have to call inode_newsize_ok from simple_setsize and simplify it down to a truncate_setsize which doesn't return an error. This simplifies a lot of setattr implementations and means we use truncate_setsize almost everywhere. Get rid of fat_setsize now that it's trivial and mark ext2_setsize static to make the calling convention obvious. Keep the inode_newsize_ok in vmtruncate for now as all callers need an audit for its removal anyway. Note: setattr code in ecryptfs doesn't call inode_change_ok at all and needs a deeper audit, but that is left for later. * rename generic_setattrChristoph Hellwig2010-08-091-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | Despite its name it's now a generic implementation of ->setattr, but rather a helper to copy attributes from a struct iattr to the inode. Rename it to setattr_copy to reflect this fact. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* get rid of block_write_begin_newtruncChristoph Hellwig2010-08-091-3/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | Move the call to vmtruncate to get rid of accessive blocks to the callers in preparation of the new truncate sequence and rename the non-truncating version to block_write_begin. While we're at it also remove several unused arguments to block_write_begin. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* introduce __block_write_beginChristoph Hellwig2010-08-091-2/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | Split up the block_write_begin implementation - __block_write_begin is a new trivial wrapper for block_prepare_write that always takes an already allocated page and can be either called from block_write_begin or filesystem code that already has a page allocated. Remove the handling of already allocated pages from block_write_begin after switching all callers that do it to __block_write_begin. * clean up write_begin usage for directories in pagecacheChristoph Hellwig2010-08-093-24/+14
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | For filesystem that implement directories in pagecache we call block_write_begin with an already allocated page for this code, while the normal regular file write path uses the default block_write_begin behaviour. Get rid of the __foofs_write_begin helper and opencode the normal write_begin call in foofs_write_begin, while adding a new foofs_prepare_chunk helper for the directory code. The added benefit is that foofs_prepare_chunk has a much saner calling convention. Note that the interruptible flag passed into block_write_begin is always ignored if we already pass in a page (see next patch for details), and we never were doing truncations of exessive blocks for this case either so we can switch directly to block_write_begin_newtrunc. * get rid of nobh_write_begin_newtruncChristoph Hellwig2010-08-091-7/+2
| | | | | | | | | | Move the call to vmtruncate to get rid of accessive blocks to the only remaining caller and rename the non-truncating version to nobh_write_begin. Get rid of the superflous file argument to it while we're at it. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* sort out blockdev_direct_IO variantsChristoph Hellwig2010-08-091-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | Move the call to vmtruncate to get rid of accessive blocks to the callers in prepearation of the new truncate calling sequence. This was only done for DIO_LOCKING filesystems, so the __blockdev_direct_IO_newtrunc variant was not needed anyway. Get rid of blockdev_direct_IO_no_locking and its _newtrunc variant while at it as just opencoding the two additional paramters is shorted than the name suffix. * ext2: update ctime when changing the file's permission by setfaclJan Kara2010-06-251-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ext2 didn't update the ctime of the file when its permission was changed. Steps to reproduce: # touch aaa # stat -c %Z aaa 1275289822 # setfacl -m 'u::x,g::x,o::x' aaa # stat -c %Z aaa 1275289822 <- unchanged But, according to the spec of the ctime, ext2 must update it. * fix truncate inode time modification breakageNick Piggin2010-06-041-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | mtime and ctime should be changed only if the file size has actually changed. Patches changing ext2 and tmpfs from vmtruncate to new truncate sequence has caused regressions where they always update timestamps. There is some strange cases in POSIX where truncate(2) must not update times unless the size has acutally changed, see 6e656be89. This area is all still rather buggy in different ways in a lot of filesystems and needs a cleanup and audit (ideally the vfs will provide a simple attribute or call to direct all filesystems exactly which attributes to change). But coming up with the best solution will take a while and is not appropriate for rc anyway. So fix recent regression for now. | * quota: move unmount handling into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig2010-05-241-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently the VFS calls into the quotactl interface for unmounting filesystems. This means filesystems with their own quota handling can't easily distinguish between user-space originating quotaoff and an unount. Instead move the responsibily of the unmount handling into the filesystem to be consistent with all other dquot handling. Note that we do call dquot_disable a lot later now, e.g. after a sync_filesystem. But this is fine as the quota code does all its writes via blockdev's mapping and that is synced even later. | * quota: kill the vfs_dq_off and vfs_dq_quota_on_remount wrappersChristoph Hellwig2010-05-241-4/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Instead of having wrappers in the VFS namespace export the dquot_suspend and dquot_resume helpers directly. Also rename vfs_quota_disable to dquot_disable while we're at it. | * quota: move remount handling into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig2010-05-241-0/+13
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently do_remount_sb calls into the dquot code to tell it about going from rw to ro and ro to rw. Move this code into the filesystem to not depend on the dquot code in the VFS - note ocfs2 already ignores these calls and handles remount by itself. This gets rid of overloading the quotactl calls and allows to unify the VFS and XFS codepaths in that area later. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz>

* | rename the generic fsync implementationsChristoph Hellwig2010-05-271-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | We don't name our generic fsync implementations very well currently. The no-op implementation for in-memory filesystems currently is called simple_sync_file which doesn't make too much sense to start with, the the generic one for simple filesystems is called simple_fsync which can lead to some confusion. This patch renames the generic file fsync method to generic_file_fsync to match the other generic_file_* routines it is supposed to be used with, and the no-op implementation to noop_fsync to make it obvious what to expect. In addition add some documentation for both methods. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>

* BKL: Remove BKL from ext2 filesystemJan Blunck2010-05-212-16/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The BKL is still used in ext2_put_super(), ext2_fill_super(), ext2_sync_fs() ext2_remount() and ext2_write_inode(). From these calls ext2_put_super(), ext2_fill_super() and ext2_remount() are protected against each other by the struct super_block s_umount rw semaphore. The call in ext2_write_inode() could only protect the modification of the ext2_sb_info through ext2_update_dynamic_rev() against concurrent ext2_sync_fs() or ext2_remount(). ext2_fill_super() and ext2_put_super() can be left out because you need a valid filesystem reference in all three cases, which you do not have when you are one of these functions. If the BKL is only protecting the modification of the ext2_sb_info it can safely be removed since this is protected by the struct ext2_sb_info s_lock. * ext2: Add ext2_sb_info s_lock spinlockJan Blunck2010-05-213-1/+30
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add a spinlock that protects against concurrent modifications of s_mount_state, s_blocks_last, s_overhead_last and the content of the superblock's buffer pointed to by sbi->s_es. The spinlock is now used in ext2_xattr_update_super_block() which was setting the EXT2_FEATURE_COMPAT_EXT_ATTR flag on the superblock without protection before. Likewise the spinlock is used in ext2_show_options() to have a consistent view of the mount options. This is a preparation patch for removing the BKL from ext2 in the next patch. * ext2: Fold ext2_commit_super() into ext2_sync_super()Jan Blunck2010-05-211-19/+9
| | | | | | | | | | Both function originally did similar things except that ext2_sync_super() is returning after the call to sync_dirty_buffer(sbh). Therefore this patch adds a wait flag to tell ext2_sync_super() if it has to call sync_dirty_buffer() to wait for in-progress I/O to finish. * ext2: Remove duplicate code from ext2_sync_fs()Jan Blunck2010-05-211-7/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | Depending in the state (valid or unchecked) of the filesystem either ext2_sync_super() or ext2_commit_super() is called. If the filesystem is currently valid (it is checked), we first mark it unchecked and afterwards duplicate the work that ext2_sync_super() is doing later. * include cleanup: Update gfp.h and slab.h includes to prepare for breaking ↵Tejun Heo2010-03-302-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | implicit slab.h inclusion from percpu.h percpu.h is included by sched.h and module.h and thus ends up being included when building most .c files. percpu.h includes slab.h which in turn includes gfp.h making everything defined by the two files universally available and complicating inclusion dependencies. percpu.h -> slab.h dependency is about to be removed. Prepare for this change by updating users of gfp and slab facilities include those headers directly instead of assuming availability. As this conversion needs to touch large number of source files, the following script is used as the basis of conversion. http://userweb.kernel.org/~tj/misc/slabh-sweep.py The script does the followings. * Scan files for gfp and slab usages and update includes such that only the necessary includes are there. ie. if only gfp is used, gfp.h, if slab is used, slab.h. * When the script inserts a new include, it looks at the include blocks and try to put the new include such that its order conforms to its surrounding. It's put in the include block which contains core kernel includes, in the same order that the rest are ordered - alphabetical, Christmas tree, rev-Xmas-tree or at the end if there doesn't seem to be any matching order. * If the script can't find a place to put a new include (mostly because the file doesn't have fitting include block), it prints out an error message indicating which .h file needs to be added to the file. The conversion was done in the following steps. 1. The initial automatic conversion of all .c files updated slightly over 4000 files, deleting around 700 includes and adding ~480 gfp.h and ~3000 slab.h inclusions. The script emitted errors for ~400 files. 2. Each error was manually checked. Some didn't need the inclusion, some needed manual addition while adding it to implementation .h or embedding .c file was more appropriate for others. This step added inclusions to around 150 files. 3. The script was run again and the output was compared to the edits from #2 to make sure no file was left behind. 4. Several build tests were done and a couple of problems were fixed. e.g. lib/decompress_*.c used malloc/free() wrappers around slab APIs requiring slab.h to be added manually. 5. The script was run on all .h files but without automatically editing them as sprinkling gfp.h and slab.h inclusions around .h files could easily lead to inclusion dependency hell. Most gfp.h inclusion directives were ignored as stuff from gfp.h was usually wildly available and often used in preprocessor macros. Each slab.h inclusion directive was examined and added manually as necessary. 6. percpu.h was updated not to include slab.h. 7. Build test were done on the following configurations and failures were fixed. CONFIG_GCOV_KERNEL was turned off for all tests (as my distributed build env didn't work with gcov compiles) and a few more options had to be turned off depending on archs to make things build (like ipr on powerpc/64 which failed due to missing writeq). * x86 and x86_64 UP and SMP allmodconfig and a custom test config. * powerpc and powerpc64 SMP allmodconfig * sparc and sparc64 SMP allmodconfig * ia64 SMP allmodconfig * s390 SMP allmodconfig * alpha SMP allmodconfig * um on x86_64 SMP allmodconfig 8. percpu.h modifications were reverted so that it could be applied as a separate patch and serve as bisection point. Given the fact that I had only a couple of failures from tests on step 6, I'm fairly confident about the coverage of this conversion patch. If there is a breakage, it's likely to be something in one of the arch headers which should be easily discoverable easily on most builds of the specific arch. | * dquot: cleanup dquot initialize routineChristoph Hellwig2010-03-054-11/+12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Get rid of the initialize dquot operation - it is now always called from the filesystem and if a filesystem really needs it's own (which none currently does) it can just call into it's own routine directly. Rename the now static low-level dquot_initialize helper to __dquot_initialize and vfs_dq_init to dquot_initialize to have a consistent namespace. | * dquot: move dquot initialization responsibility into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig2010-03-053-19/+41
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently various places in the VFS call vfs_dq_init directly. This means we tie the quota code into the VFS. Get rid of that and make the filesystem responsible for the initialization. For most metadata operations this is a straight forward move into the methods, but for truncate and open it's a bit more complicated. For truncate we currently only call vfs_dq_init for the sys_truncate case because open already takes care of it for ftruncate and open(O_TRUNC) - the new code causes an additional vfs_dq_init for those which is harmless. For open the initialization is moved from do_filp_open into the open method, which means it happens slightly earlier now, and only for regular files. The latter is fine because we don't need to initialize it for operations on special files, and we already do it as part of the namespace operations for directories. Add a dquot_file_open helper that filesystems that support generic quotas can use to fill in ->open. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz>
| * dquot: cleanup dquot drop routineChristoph Hellwig2010-03-052-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Get rid of the drop dquot operation - it is now always called from the filesystem and if a filesystem really needs it's own (which none currently does) it can just call into it's own routine directly. Rename the now static low-level dquot_drop helper to __dquot_drop and vfs_dq_drop to dquot_drop to have a consistent namespace. | * dquot: move dquot drop responsibility into the filesystemChristoph Hellwig2010-03-051-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently clear_inode calls vfs_dq_drop directly. This means we tie the quota code into the VFS. Get rid of that and make the filesystem responsible for the drop inside the ->clear_inode superblock operation. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz>
| * dquot: cleanup dquot transfer routineChristoph Hellwig2010-03-051-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Get rid of the transfer dquot operation - it is now always called from the filesystem and if a filesystem really needs it's own (which none currently does) it can just call into it's own routine directly. Rename the now static low-level dquot_transfer helper to __dquot_transfer and vfs_dq_transfer to dquot_transfer to have a consistent namespace, and make the new dquot_transfer return a normal negative errno value which all callers expect. | * dquot: cleanup inode allocation / freeing routinesChristoph Hellwig2010-03-051-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Get rid of the alloc_inode and free_inode dquot operations - they are always called from the filesystem and if a filesystem really needs their own (which none currently does) it can just call into it's own routine directly. Also get rid of the vfs_dq_alloc/vfs_dq_free wrappers and always call the lowlevel dquot_alloc_inode / dqout_free_inode routines directly, which now lose the number argument which is always 1. | * dquot: cleanup space allocation / freeing routinesChristoph Hellwig2010-03-052-10/+12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Get rid of the alloc_space, free_space, reserve_space, claim_space and release_rsv dquot operations - they are always called from the filesystem and if a filesystem really needs their own (which none currently does) it can just call into it's own routine directly. Move shared logic into the common __dquot_alloc_space, dquot_claim_space_nodirty and __dquot_free_space low-level methods, and rationalize the wrappers around it to move as much as possible code into the common block for CONFIG_QUOTA vs not. Also rename all these helpers to be named dquot_* instead of vfs_dq_*. Signed-off-by: Christoph Hellwig <hch@lst.de> Signed-off-by: Jan Kara <jack@suse.cz>
* | pass writeback_control to ->write_inodeChristoph Hellwig2010-03-052-3/+10
|/ | | | | | | | | | This gives the filesystem more information about the writeback that is happening. Trond requested this for the NFS unstable write handling, and other filesystems might benefit from this too by beeing able to distinguish between the different callers in more detail.
