* ath9k_hw: do not lower ANI setting below default on AR913xFelix Fietkau2014-04-301-0/+6
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | When the amount of noise fluctuates strongly, low immunity settings can sometimes disrupt signal detection on AR913x chips. When that happens, no OFDM/CCK errors are reported anymore, and ANI tunes the radio to the lowest immunity settings. Usually rx/tx fails as well in that case. To fix this, keep noise immunity settings at or above ANI default level, which will keep radio parameters at or above INI values. Signed-off-by: Felix Fietkau <nbd@openwrt.org> Signed-off-by: John W. * ath9k_hw: remove ANI function restrictions for AP modeFelix Fietkau2014-03-141-11/+0
| | | | | | | | | | The primary purpose of this piece of code was to selectively disable OFDM weak signal detection. The checks for this are elsewhere, and an earlier commit relaxed the restrictions for older chips, which are more sensitive to interference. * ath9k_hw: tweak noise immunity thresholds for older chipsetsFelix Fietkau2014-03-031-4/+19
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | Older chipsets are more sensitive to high PHY error counts, and the current noise immunity thresholds were based on tests run at QCA with newer chipsets. This patch brings back the values from the old ANI implementation for old chipsets, and it also disables weak signal detection on an earlier noise immunity level, to improve overall radio stability on affected devices. * ath9k_hw: toggle weak signal detection in AP mode on older chipsetsFelix Fietkau2014-03-031-8/+10
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The commit 80b4205b "ath9k: Fix OFDM weak signal detection for AP mode" prevented weak signal detection changes from taking effect in AP mode on all chipsets, claiming it is "not allowed". The main reason for not disabling weak signal detection in AP mode is that typically beacon RSSI is used to track whether it is needed to boost range, and this is unavailable in AP mode for obvious reasons. The problem with not disabling weak signal detection is that older chipsets are very sensitive to high PHY error counts. When faced with heavy noise, this can lead to an excessive amount of "Failed to stop TX DMA" errors in the field. Signed-off-by: Felix Fietkau <nbd@openwrt.org> Signed-off-by: John W. * ath9k: Fix ANI for AP modeSujith Manoharan2013-06-171-17/+12
| | | | | | | | | | | | | The commit "ath9k: Fix ANI monitoring" reverted an earlier commit that adjusted ANI to improve performance. But, this causes adverse effects in AP mode (as reported by Felix based on an OpenWrt report). Use the older INI/period configuration for now until more testing is done. * ath9k: Fix ANI monitoringSujith Manoharan2013-06-121-12/+17
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The commit "ath9k_hw: improve ANI processing and rx desensitizing parameters" changed various ANI operational parameters to address a specific card/environment. This is not really applicable for other cards in general usage. As per internal documentation, lowering the immunity level can be done only after 5 periods have passed and the CCK/OFDM errors are below the low watermak threshold - which have been fixed at 300 and 400 respectively by the sytems team. Raising the immunity level can be done when CCK/OFDM errors exceed 600 and 1000 (per second). Set these values once during attach. * ath9k: fix ANI operation in AP modeFelix Fietkau2012-06-281-14/+15
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | ath9k_ani_reset (which is called at reset time) uses a state variable ani->update_ani to prevent the ANI noise immunity state on the operating channel from being overwritten by background scans. Unfortunately this is also being set for AP mode, since it's mixed with code that is only supposed to change the default settings after a reset. In AP mode this has the side effect of having ANI run, but being unable to change its runtime noise immunity level, making it effectively useless. Fix this by getting rid of ani->update_ani and passing a parameter to ath9k_hw_set_ofdm_nil and ath9k_hw_set_cck_nil instead. * ath9k_hw: fix OFDM weak signal detection handlingFelix Fietkau2012-06-201-4/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Commit "ath9k_hw: improve ANI processing and rx desensitizing parameters" was unifying some code related to overriding OFDM weak signal detection, but seems to have gotten some of the original intent wrong, probably because of a misnamed variable. The beacon RSSI is only valid in station mode, and the main reason to check it in ath9k_hw_set_ofdm_nil is to make sure that OFDM weak signal detection stays enabled if the RSSI is low, even when the OFDM noise immunity entry is supposed to disable it. The above commit removed the mode checks and changed the code so that OFDM weak signal detection would only be changed if the rssi is high, which is wrong for everything but client mode. This patch restores the old behavior in a simplified form. Signed-off-by: Felix Fietkau <nbd@openwrt.org> Signed-off-by: John W. Linville <linville@tuxdriver.com>

* ath9k_hw: improve ANI processing and rx desensitizing parametersRajkumar Manoharan2012-04-091-26/+23
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch improves ANI operations by switching among the immunity levels based on PHY errors and beacon rssi which will adjust receiver desensitizing parameters. The changes are * Configure the Weak Signal Detection based on current immunity value. * At highest OFDM immunity level poor performance was observed with strong interference. By tuning the FIR step and spur immunity levels and not changing any weak signal detection thresholds at any level helped to improve the performance. * ANI took long time to recover back to lower immunity levels on heavy data load. As the listen time got reset to zero before reaching to the 5x of aniperiod, the immunity level is not lowering back even without any interference. This patch fix that. * ath9k_hw: remove function pointer abstraction for internal ANI opsFelix Fietkau2010-10-061-30/+28
| | | | | | | | | The code gets more concise and readable when making the new ANI functions fall back to the old ones if ANI v2 is disabled. This also makes further code cleanup easier. Signed-off-by: Felix Fietkau <nbd@openwrt.org> Signed-off-by: John W. Linville <linville@tuxdriver.com>
* ath9k_hw: remove code duplication in phy error counter handlingFelix Fietkau2010-10-061-110/+32
| | | | | | | | | Split out the PHY error counter update from ath9k_hw_ani_monitor_*, reuse it in ath9k_hw_proc_mib_event (merged from ath9k_hw_proc_mib_event_old and ath9k_hw_proc_mib_event_new). * ath9k_hw: clean up ANI state handlingFelix Fietkau2010-10-061-235/+103
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | ANI state is kept per channel, so instead of keeping an array of ANI states with an arbitrary size of 255, move the ANI state into the channel struct. Move some config settings that are not per-channel out of the per-channel struct to save some memory. With those changes, ath9k_ani_restart_old and ath9k_ani_restart_new can be merged into a single function. Signed-off-by: Felix Fietkau <nbd@openwrt.org> Signed-off-by: John W.
