* generic debug pageallocAkinobu Mita2009-04-011-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | CONFIG_DEBUG_PAGEALLOC is now supported by x86, powerpc, sparc64, and s390. This patch implements it for the rest of the architectures by filling the pages with poison byte patterns after free_pages() and verifying the poison patterns before alloc_pages(). This generic one cannot detect invalid page accesses immediately but invalid read access may cause invalid dereference by poisoned memory and invalid write access can be detected after a long delay. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Use 64BIT config entry to distinguish between 32 and 64bit builds instead of relying on the ARCH setting. Using sparc64 as ARCH still forces 64BIT on. * sparc: delete unused config symbolsSam Ravnborg2009-01-021-28/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | There is no need to define a config symbol if it is never set to any value. Undefined symbols equal to 'n'. GENERIC_GPIO looks like it is similar but it is set using select in some other file so it must be kept. Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Signed-off-by: David S. * sparc: move select of ARCH_SUPPORTS_MSISam Ravnborg2008-12-271-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | It is counter intuitive to have the select listed as part of the PCI option. Move the select to the SPARC64 specific part of the config. PCI_MSI has a dependency on PCI so it does not harm to have it always selected. Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

* sparc: Always set AUDIT_ARCH, not just on sparc64.David S. Miller2008-12-051-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | Without fancy makefile rules it's not straightforward to prevent both arch/sparc/kernel/audit.o and lib/audit.o from both being used on sparc32. Since arch/sparc/kernel/audit.c is identical to lib/audit.c except some CONFIG_COMPAT protected sections of code, just use it on sparc32 too as that's the simplest way to fix this. * sparc,sparc64: unify MakefileSam Ravnborg2008-12-041-0/+7
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | To unify Makefile for sparc and sparc64 a few other steps was needed: 1) separate defconfig files for sparc and sparc64 is required, so locate these in arch/sparc/configs 2) removoval of hack in toplevel Makefile to deal with that headers was in a separate directory compared to the rest The unification of the Makefile required usage of several foo-$(CONFIG_SPARCnn) += due to a few directories pending unification. This will be cleaned up when we unify the remaining directories. Included in this patch are the deletion of a few files in sparc64 as they are no longer needed: Makefile + Kconfig. arch/sparc64/ will after this patch is applied only have four directories (prom, lib, kernel, boot) Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Signed-off-by: David S. | | | | | | | | | | | | | Stephen Rothwell pointed out that pcmcia can't be enabled on sparc64. There is an empty non-prompt PCMCIA explicit entry in arch/sparc/Kconfig but that doesn't do anything. 32-bit sparc needs a small hack to make this work, since it doesn't use the generic IRQ layer yes. We have to provide a dummy definition of probe_irq_mask(), since this is used by the yenta socket driver. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>

* container freezer: implement freezer cgroup subsystemMatt Helsley2008-10-201-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch implements a new freezer subsystem in the control groups framework. It provides a way to stop and resume execution of all tasks in a cgroup by writing in the cgroup filesystem. The freezer subsystem in the container filesystem defines a file named freezer.state. Writing "FROZEN" to the state file will freeze all tasks in the cgroup. Subsequently writing "RUNNING" will unfreeze the tasks in the cgroup. Reading will return the current state. * Examples of usage : # mkdir /containers/freezer # mount -t cgroup -ofreezer freezer /containers # mkdir /containers/0 # echo $some_pid > /containers/0/tasks to get status of the freezer subsystem : # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING to freeze all tasks in the container : # echo FROZEN > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FREEZING # cat /containers/0/freezer.state FROZEN to unfreeze all tasks in the container : # echo RUNNING > /containers/0/freezer.state # cat /containers/0/freezer.state RUNNING This is the basic mechanism which should do the right thing for user space task in a simple scenario. It's important to note that freezing can be incomplete. In that case we return EBUSY. This means that some tasks in the cgroup are busy doing something that prevents us from completely freezing the cgroup at this time. After EBUSY, the cgroup will remain partially frozen -- reflected by freezer.state reporting "FREEZING" when read. The state will remain "FREEZING" until one of these things happens: 1) Userspace cancels the freezing operation by writing "RUNNING" to the freezer.state file 2) Userspace retries the freezing operation by writing "FROZEN" to the freezer.state file (writing "FREEZING" is not legal and returns EIO) 3) The tasks that blocked the cgroup from entering the "FROZEN" state disappear from the cgroup's set of tasks. * avoid overflows in kernel/time.cH. Peter Anvin2008-02-081-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When the conversion factor between jiffies and milli- or microseconds is not a single multiply or divide, as for the case of HZ == 300, we currently do a multiply followed by a divide. The intervening result, however, is subject to overflows, especially since the fraction is not simplified (for HZ == 300, we multiply by 300 and divide by 1000). This is exposed to the user when passing a large timeout to poll(), for example. This patch replaces the multiply-divide with a reciprocal multiplication on 32-bit platforms. When the input is an unsigned long, there is no portable way to do this on 64-bit platforms there is no portable way to do this since it requires a 128-bit intermediate result (which gcc does support on 64-bit platforms but may generate libgcc calls, e.g. on 64-bit s390), but since the output is a 32-bit integer in the cases affected, just simplify the multiply-divide (*3/10 instead of *300/1000). The reciprocal multiply used can have off-by-one errors in the upper half of the valid output range. This could be avoided at the expense of having to deal with a potential 65-bit intermediate result. Since the intent is to avoid overflow problems and most of the other time conversions are only semiexact, the off-by-one errors were considered an acceptable tradeoff. At Ralf Baechle's suggestion, this version uses a Perl script to compute the necessary constants. We already have dependencies on Perl for kernel compiles. This does, however, require the Perl module Math::BigInt, which is included in the standard Perl distribution starting with version 5.8.0. In order to support older versions of Perl, include a table of canned constants in the script itself, and structure the script so that Math::BigInt isn't required if pulling values from said table. Running the script requires that the HZ value is available from the Makefile. Thus, this patch also adds the Kconfig variable CONFIG_HZ to the architectures which didn't already have it (alpha, cris, frv, h8300, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, sparc, v850, and xtensa.) It does *not* touch the sh or sh64 architectures, since Paul Mundt has dealt with those separately in the sh tree. Signed-off-by: H. It would be much better to do depends on ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES in that generic file, and then architectures that do support it would just have a bool ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES default y in *their* architecture files. That would seem to be much more logical, and is readable both for arch maintainers *and* for people who have no clue - and don't care - about which architecture is supposed to support which interface... Changelog: Actually, I know I gave this as the magic incantation, but now that I see it, I realize that I should have told you to just use config ARCH_SUPPORTS_KPROBES def_bool y instead, which is a bit denser. * [PATCH] Set CONFIG_ZONE_DMA for arches with GENERIC_ISA_DMAChristoph Lameter2007-02-111-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As Andi pointed out: CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA only disables the ISA DMA channel management. Other functionality may still expect GFP_DMA to provide memory below 16M. So we need to make sure that CONFIG_ZONE_DMA is set independent of CONFIG_GENERIC_ISA_DMA. Undo the modifications to mm/Kconfig where we made ZONE_DMA dependent on GENERIC_ISA_DMA and set theses explicitly in each arches Kconfig. Reviews must occur for each arch in order to determine if ZONE_DMA can be switched off. It can only be switched off if we know that all devices supported by a platform are capable of performing DMA transfers to all of memory (Some arches already support this: uml, avr32, sh sh64, parisc and IA64/Altix). In order to switch ZONE_DMA off conditionally, one would have to establish a scheme by which one can assure that no drivers are enabled that are only capable of doing I/O to a part of memory, or one needs to provide an alternate means of performing an allocation from a specific range of memory (like provided by alloc_pages_range()) and insure that all drivers use that call. In that case the arches alloc_dma_coherent() may need to be modified to call alloc_pages_range() instead of relying on GFP_DMA. * [PATCH] LOG2: Implement a general integer log2 facility in the kernelDavid Howells2006-12-081-0/+8
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This facility provides three entry points: ilog2() Log base 2 of unsigned long ilog2_u32() Log base 2 of u32 ilog2_u64() Log base 2 of u64 These facilities can either be used inside functions on dynamic data: int do_something(long q) { ...; y = ilog2(x) ...; } Or can be used to statically initialise global variables with constant values: unsigned n = ilog2(27); When performing static initialisation, the compiler will report "error: initializer element is not constant" if asked to take a log of zero or of something not reducible to a constant. They treat negative numbers as unsigned. When not dealing with a constant, they fall back to using fls() which permits them to use arch-specific log calculation instructions - such as BSR on x86/x86_64 or SCAN on FRV - if available. * [SPARC]: Try to start getting SMP back into shape.Bob Breuer2006-03-231-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Todo items: - IRQ_INPROGRESS flag - use sparc64 irq buckets, or generic irq_desc? - sun4d - re-indent large chunks of sun4m_smp.c - some places assume sequential cpu numbering (i.e. 0,1 instead of 0,2) Last I checked (with 2.6.14), random programs segfault with dual HyperSPARC. And with SuperSPARC II's, it seems stable but will eventually die from a write lock error (wrong lock owner or something). I haven't tried the HyperSPARC + highmem combination recently, so that may still be a problem. Signed-off-by: David S. Miller <davem@davemloft.net>
