* [PATCH] prepare vfs_readdir() callers to returning filldir resultAl Viro2008-10-231-3/+2
| | | | | | | It's not the final state, but it allows moving ->readdir() instances to passing filldir return value to caller of vfs_readdir(). Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
* fix typo in arch/parisc/hpux/fs.cStephen Rothwell2008-09-021-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | A parisc allmodconfig build produces this: arch/parisc/hpux/fs.c:107: error: 'buffer' undeclared (first use in this function) Introduced by commit da574983de9f9283ba35662c8723627096e160de ("[PATCH] fix hpux_getdents()"). Helge Dille also reported this in bugzilla 11461: http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11461 and he posted an identical patch. | | | | | | | | | | | | | * do not pass nameidata; struct path is all the callers want. * switch to new helpers: user_path_at(dfd, pathname, flags, &path) user_path(pathname, &path) user_lpath(pathname, &path) user_path_dir(pathname, &path) (fail if not a directory) The last 3 are trivial macro wrappers for the first one. * remove nameidata in callers. * flag parameters: pipeUlrich Drepper2008-07-241-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch introduces the new syscall pipe2 which is like pipe but it also takes an additional parameter which takes a flag value. This patch implements the handling of O_CLOEXEC for the flag. I did not add support for the new syscall for the architectures which have a special sys_pipe implementation. I think the maintainers of those archs have the chance to go with the unified implementation but that's up to them. The implementation introduces do_pipe_flags. I did that instead of changing all callers of do_pipe because some of the callers are written in assembler. I would probably screw up changing the assembly code. To avoid breaking code do_pipe is now a small wrapper around do_pipe_flags. Once all callers are changed over to do_pipe_flags the old do_pipe function can be removed. The following test must be adjusted for architectures other than x86 and x86-64 and in case the syscall numbers changed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #include <fcntl.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <sys/syscall.h> #ifndef __NR_pipe2 # ifdef __x86_64__ # define __NR_pipe2 293 # elif defined __i386__ # define __NR_pipe2 331 # else # error "need __NR_pipe2" # endif #endif int main (void) { int fd[2]; if (syscall (__NR_pipe2, fd, 0) != 0) { puts ("pipe2(0) failed"); return 1; } for (int i = 0; i < 2; ++i) { int coe = fcntl (fd[i], F_GETFD); if (coe == -1) { puts ("fcntl failed"); return 1; } if (coe & FD_CLOEXEC) { printf ("pipe2(0) set close-on-exit for fd[%d]\n", i); return 1; } } close (fd[0]); close (fd[1]); if (syscall (__NR_pipe2, fd, O_CLOEXEC) != 0) { puts ("pipe2(O_CLOEXEC) failed"); return 1; } for (int i = 0; i < 2; ++i) { int coe = fcntl (fd[i], F_GETFD); if (coe == -1) { puts ("fcntl failed"); return 1; } if ((coe & FD_CLOEXEC) == 0) { printf ("pipe2(O_CLOEXEC) does not set close-on-exit for fd[%d]\n", i); return 1; } } close (fd[0]); close (fd[1]); puts ("OK"); return 0; } ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Signed-off-by: Ulrich Drepper <drepper@redhat.com> Acked-by: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@googlemail.com> Cc: <linux-arch@vger.kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

* Embed a struct path into struct nameidata instead of nd->{dentry,mnt}Jan Blunck2008-02-141-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is the central patch of a cleanup series. In most cases there is no good reason why someone would want to use a dentry for itself. This series reflects that fact and embeds a struct path into nameidata. Together with the other patches of this series - it enforced the correct order of getting/releasing the reference count on <dentry,vfsmount> pairs - it prepares the VFS for stacking support since it is essential to have a struct path in every place where the stack can be traversed - it reduces the overall code size: without patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5321639 858418 715768 6895825 6938d1 vmlinux with patch series: text data bss dec hex filename 5320026 858418 715768 6894212 693284 vmlinux This patch: Switch from nd->{dentry,mnt} to nd->path.{dentry,mnt} everywhere. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Remove fs.h from mm.h. For this, 1) Uninline vma_wants_writenotify(). It's pretty huge anyway. 2) Add back fs.h or less bloated headers (err.h) to files that need it. As result, on x86_64 allyesconfig, fs.h dependencies cut down from 3929 files rebuilt down to 3444 (-12.3%). * [PATCH] VFS: Make filldir_t and struct kstat deal in 64-bit inode numbersDavid Howells2006-10-031-1/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | These patches make the kernel pass 64-bit inode numbers internally when communicating to userspace, even on a 32-bit system. They are required because some filesystems have intrinsic 64-bit inode numbers: NFS3+ and XFS for example. The 64-bit inode numbers are then propagated to userspace automatically where the arch supports it. Problems have been seen with userspace (eg: ld.so) using the 64-bit inode number returned by stat64() or getdents64() to differentiate files, and failing because the 64-bit inode number space was compressed to 32-bits, and so overlaps occur. This patch: Make filldir_t take a 64-bit inode number and struct kstat carry a 64-bit inode number so that 64-bit inode numbers can be passed back to userspace. The stat functions then returns the full 64-bit inode number where available and where possible. If it is not possible to represent the inode number supplied by the filesystem in the field provided by userspace, then error EOVERFLOW will be issued. Similarly, the getdents/readdir functions now pass the full 64-bit inode number to userspace where possible, returning EOVERFLOW instead when a directory entry is encountered that can't be properly represented. Note that this means that some inodes will not be stat'able on a 32-bit system with old libraries where they were before - but it does mean that there will be no ambiguity over what a 32-bit inode number refers to. Note similarly that directory scans may be cut short with an error on a 32-bit system with old libraries where the scan would work before for the same reasons. It is judged unlikely that this situation will occur because modern glibc uses 64-bit capable versions of stat and getdents class functions exclusively, and that older systems are unlikely to encounter unrepresentable inode numbers anyway. * [PATCH] VFS: Permit filesystem to perform statfs with a known root dentryDavid Howells2006-06-231-5/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Give the statfs superblock operation a dentry pointer rather than a superblock pointer. This complements the get_sb() patch. That reduced the significance of sb->s_root, allowing NFS to place a fake root there. However, NFS does require a dentry to use as a target for the statfs operation. This permits the root in the vfsmount to be used instead. linux/mount.h has been added where necessary to make allyesconfig build successfully. Interest has also been expressed for use with the FUSE and XFS filesystems. Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
