| | | | | | | | | | | | The default defconfig should be one from arch/m68k/configs/ arch/m68k/defconfig was not exactly identical to amiga_defconfig but also considering how long they have been without any update that doesn't seem to have been on purpose. * ide: introduce HAVE_IDESam Ravnborg2008-02-091-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | To allow flexible configuration of IDE introduce HAVE_IDE. All archs except arm, um and s390 unconditionally select it. For arm the actual configuration determine if IDE is supported. This is a step towards introducing drivers/Kconfig for arm. * avoid overflows in kernel/time.cH. Peter Anvin2008-02-081-0/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When the conversion factor between jiffies and milli- or microseconds is not a single multiply or divide, as for the case of HZ == 300, we currently do a multiply followed by a divide. The intervening result, however, is subject to overflows, especially since the fraction is not simplified (for HZ == 300, we multiply by 300 and divide by 1000). This is exposed to the user when passing a large timeout to poll(), for example. This patch replaces the multiply-divide with a reciprocal multiplication on 32-bit platforms. When the input is an unsigned long, there is no portable way to do this on 64-bit platforms there is no portable way to do this since it requires a 128-bit intermediate result (which gcc does support on 64-bit platforms but may generate libgcc calls, e.g. on 64-bit s390), but since the output is a 32-bit integer in the cases affected, just simplify the multiply-divide (*3/10 instead of *300/1000). The reciprocal multiply used can have off-by-one errors in the upper half of the valid output range. This could be avoided at the expense of having to deal with a potential 65-bit intermediate result. Since the intent is to avoid overflow problems and most of the other time conversions are only semiexact, the off-by-one errors were considered an acceptable tradeoff. At Ralf Baechle's suggestion, this version uses a Perl script to compute the necessary constants. We already have dependencies on Perl for kernel compiles. This does, however, require the Perl module Math::BigInt, which is included in the standard Perl distribution starting with version 5.8.0. In order to support older versions of Perl, include a table of canned constants in the script itself, and structure the script so that Math::BigInt isn't required if pulling values from said table. Running the script requires that the HZ value is available from the Makefile. Thus, this patch also adds the Kconfig variable CONFIG_HZ to the architectures which didn't already have it (alpha, cris, frv, h8300, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, sparc, v850, and xtensa.) It does *not* touch the sh or sh64 architectures, since Paul Mundt has dealt with those separately in the sh tree. Signed-off-by: H. * aout: suppress A.OUT library support if !CONFIG_ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUTDavid Howells2008-02-081-47/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Suppress A.OUT library support if CONFIG_ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUT is not set. Not all architectures support the A.OUT binfmt, so the ELF binfmt should not be permitted to go looking for A.OUT libraries to load in such a case. Not only that, but under such conditions A.OUT core dumps are not produced either. To make this work, this patch also does the following: (1) Makes the existence of the contents of linux/a.out.h contingent on CONFIG_ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUT. (2) Renames dump_thread() to aout_dump_thread() as it's only called by A.OUT core dumping code. (3) Moves aout_dump_thread() into asm/a.out-core.h and makes it inline. This is then included only where needed. This means that this bit of arch code will be stored in the appropriate A.OUT binfmt module rather than the core kernel. (4) Drops A.OUT support for Blackfin (according to Mike Frysinger it's not needed) and FRV. This patch depends on the previous patch to move STACK_TOP[_MAX] out of asm/a.out.h and into asm/processor.h as they're required whether or not A.OUT format is available. * aout: mark arches that support A.OUT formatDavid Howells2008-02-081-0/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Mark arches that support A.OUT format by including the following in their master Kconfig files: config ARCH_SUPPORTS_AOUT def_bool y This should also be set if the arch provides compatibility A.OUT support for an older arch, for instance x86_64 for i386 or sparc64 for sparc. I've guessed at which arches don't, based on comments in the code, however I'm sure that some of the ones I've marked as 'yes' actually should be 'no'. * Introduce flags for reserve_bootmem()Bernhard Walle2008-02-072-2/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patchset adds a flags variable to reserve_bootmem() and uses the BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE flag in crashkernel reservation code to detect collisions between crashkernel area and already used memory. This patch: Change the reserve_bootmem() function to accept a new flag BOOTMEM_EXCLUSIVE. If that flag is set, the function returns with -EBUSY if the memory already has been reserved in the past. This is to avoid conflicts. Because that code runs before SMP initialisation, there's no race condition inside reserve_bootmem_core(). * timerfd: new timerfd APIDavide Libenzi2008-02-051-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This is the new timerfd API as it is implemented by the following patch: int timerfd_create(int clockid, int flags); int timerfd_settime(int ufd, int flags, const struct itimerspec *utmr, struct itimerspec *otmr); int timerfd_gettime(int ufd, struct itimerspec *otmr); The timerfd_create() API creates an un-programmed timerfd fd. The "clockid" parameter can be either CLOCK_MONOTONIC or CLOCK_REALTIME. The timerfd_settime() API give new settings by the timerfd fd, by optionally retrieving the previous expiration time (in case the "otmr" parameter is not NULL). The time value specified in "utmr" is absolute, if the TFD_TIMER_ABSTIME bit is set in the "flags" parameter. Otherwise it's a relative time. The timerfd_gettime() API returns the next expiration time of the timer, or {0, 0} if the timerfd has not been set yet. Like the previous timerfd API implementation, read(2) and poll(2) are supported (with the same interface). Here's a simple test program I used to exercise the new timerfd APIs: http://www.xmailserver.org/timerfd-test2.c [akpm@linux-foundation.org: coding-style cleanups] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix ia64 build] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix m68k build] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix mips build] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix alpha, arm, blackfin, cris, m68k, s390, sparc and sparc64 builds] [heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com: fix s390] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix powerpc build] [akpm@linux-foundation.org: fix sparc64 more] Signed-off-by: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk-manpages@gmx.net> Cc: Thomas Gleixner <tglx@linutronix.de> Cc: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk-manpages@gmx.net> Cc: Martin Schwidefsky <schwidefsky@de.ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Heiko Carstens <heiko.carstens@de.ibm.com> Cc: Michael Kerrisk <mtk.manpages@gmail.com> Cc: Davide Libenzi <davidel@xmailserver.org> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@linux-foundation.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

* pid namespaces: define is_global_init() and is_container_init()Serge E. Hallyn2007-10-191-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | is_init() is an ambiguous name for the pid==1 check. Split it into is_global_init() and is_container_init(). A cgroup init has it's tsk->pid == 1. A global init also has it's tsk->pid == 1 and it's active pid namespace is the init_pid_ns. But rather than check the active pid namespace, compare the task structure with 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper', which is initialized during boot to the /sbin/init process and never changes. Changelog: 2.6.22-rc4-mm2-pidns1: - Use 'init_pid_ns.child_reaper' to determine if a given task is the global init (/sbin/init) process. This would improve performance and remove dependence on the task_pid(). 2.6.21-mm2-pidns2: - [Sukadev Bhattiprolu] Changed is_container_init() calls in {powerpc, ppc,avr32}/traps.c for the _exception() call to is_global_init(). | * kbuild: enable 'make CFLAGS=...' to add additional options to CCSam Ravnborg2007-10-141-4/+4
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The variable CFLAGS is a wellknown variable and the usage by kbuild may result in unexpected behaviour. On top of that several people over time has asked for a way to pass in additional flags to gcc. This patch replace use of CFLAGS with KBUILD_CFLAGS all over the tree and enabling one to use: make CFLAGS=... to specify additional gcc commandline options. One usecase is when trying to find gcc bugs but other use cases has been requested too. Patch was tested on following architectures: alpha, arm, i386, x86_64, mips, sparc, sparc64, ia64, m68k Test was simple to do a defconfig build, apply the patch and check that nothing got rebuild. * | During VM oom condition, kill all threads in process groupWill Schmidt2007-10-161-1/+1

Killing just one of the process threads can leave the application in a bad state, whereas killing the entire process group would allow for the application to restart, or be otherwise handled, and makes it very obvious that something has gone wrong. This change allows the entire process group to be taken down, rather than just the one thread. * Fix spurious syscall tracing after PTRACE_DETACH + PTRACE_ATTACHRoland McGrath2007-09-101-1/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | When PTRACE_SYSCALL was used and then PTRACE_DETACH is used, the TIF_SYSCALL_TRACE flag is left set on the formerly-traced task. This means that when a new tracer comes along and does PTRACE_ATTACH, it's possible he gets a syscall tracing stop even though he's never used PTRACE_SYSCALL. This happens if the task was in the middle of a system call when the second PTRACE_ATTACH was done. The symptom is an unexpected SIGTRAP when the tracer thinks that only SIGSTOP should have been provoked by his ptrace calls so far. A few machines already fixed this in ptrace_disable (i386, ia64, m68k). But all other machines do not, and still have this bug. On x86_64, this constitutes a regression in IA32 compatibility support. Since all machines now use TIF_SYSCALL_TRACE for this, I put the clearing of TIF_SYSCALL_TRACE in the generic ptrace_detach code rather than adding it to every other machine's ptrace_disable.
