* [PATCH] sys_kexec_load() naming fixupsAndrew Morton2006-04-111-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | __NR_sys_kexec_load should be __NR_kexec_load. Mainly affects users of the _syscallN() macros, and glibc is already checking for __NR_kexec_load. * [PATCH] Configurable NODES_SHIFTYasunori Goto2006-04-111-7/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Current implementations define NODES_SHIFT in include/asm-xxx/numnodes.h for each arch. Its definition is sometimes configurable. Indeed, ia64 defines 5 NODES_SHIFT values in the current git tree. But it looks a bit messy. SGI-SN2(ia64) system requires 1024 nodes, and the number of nodes already has been changeable by config. Suitable node's number may be changed in the future even if it is other architecture. So, I wrote configurable node's number. This patch set defines just default value for each arch which needs multi nodes except ia64. But, it is easy to change to configurable if necessary. On ia64 the number of nodes can be already configured in generic ia64 and SN2 config. But, NODES_SHIFT is defined for DIG64 and HP'S machine too. So, I changed it so that all platforms can be configured via CONFIG_NODES_SHIFT. It would be simpler. * [PATCH] bitops: sh: make thread_info.flags an unsigned longAkinobu Mita2006-03-261-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The test_bit() routines are defined to work on a pointer to unsigned long. But thread_info.flags is __u32 (unsigned int) on sh and it is passed to flag set/clear/test wrappers in include/linux/thread_info.h. So the compiler will print warnings. This patch changes to unsigned long instead. * [PATCH] bitops: use non atomic operations for minix_*_bit() and ext2_*_bit()Akinobu Mita2006-03-261-11/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Bitmap functions for the minix filesystem and the ext2 filesystem except ext2_set_bit_atomic() and ext2_clear_bit_atomic() do not require the atomic guarantees. But these are defined by using atomic bit operations on several architectures. (cris, frv, h8300, ia64, m32r, m68k, m68knommu, mips, s390, sh, sh64, sparc, sparc64, v850, and xtensa) This patch switches to non atomic bit operation. * [PATCH] 2TB files: add blkcnt_tTakashi Sato2006-03-261-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Add blkcnt_t as the type of inode.i_blocks. This enables you to make the size of blkcnt_t either 4 bytes or 8 bytes on 32 bits architecture with CONFIG_LSF. - CONFIG_LSF Add new configuration parameter. - blkcnt_t On h8300, i386, mips, powerpc, s390 and sh that define sector_t, blkcnt_t is defined as u64 if CONFIG_LSF is enabled; otherwise it is defined as unsigned long. On other architectures, it is defined as unsigned long. - inode.i_blocks Change the type from sector_t to blkcnt_t. * [PATCH] 2TB files: st_blocks is invalid when calling stat64Takashi Sato2006-03-261-7/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch series fixes the following problems on 32 bits architecture. o stat64 returns the lower 32 bits of blocks, although userland st_blocks has 64 bits, because i_blocks has only 32 bits. The ioctl with FIOQSIZE has the same problem. o As Dave Kleikamp said, making >2TB file on JFS results in writing an invalid block number to disk inode. The cause is the same as above too. o In generic quota code dquot_transfer(), the file usage is calculated from i_blocks via inode_get_bytes(). If the file is over 2TB, the change of usage is less than expected. The cause is the same as above too. o As Trond Myklebust said, statfs64's entries related to blocks are invalid on statfs64 for a network filesystem which has more than 2^32-1 blocks with CONFIG_LBD disabled. [PATCH 3/3] We made patches to fix problems that occur when handling a large filesystem and a large file. It was discussed on the mails titled "stat64 for over 2TB file returned invalid st_blocks". * [PATCH] POLLRDHUP/EPOLLRDHUP handling for half-closed devices notificationsDavide Libenzi2006-03-251-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Implement the half-closed devices notifiation, by adding a new POLLRDHUP (and its alias EPOLLRDHUP) bit to the existing poll/select sets. Since the existing POLLHUP handling, that does not report correctly half-closed devices, was feared to be changed, this implementation leaves the current POLLHUP reporting unchanged and simply add a new bit that is set in the few places where it makes sense. The same thing was discussed and conceptually agreed quite some time ago: http://lkml.org/lkml/2003/7/12/116 Since this new event bit is added to the existing Linux poll infrastruture, even the existing poll/select system calls will be able to use it. As far as the existing POLLHUP handling, the patch leaves it as is. The pollrdhup-2.6.16.rc5-0.10.diff defines the POLLRDHUP for all the existing archs and sets the bit in the six relevant files. The other attached diff is the simple change required to sys/epoll.h to add the EPOLLRDHUP definition. There is "a stupid program" to test POLLRDHUP delivery here: http://www.xmailserver.org/pollrdhup-test.c It tests poll(2), but since the delivery is same epoll(2) will work equally. * [PATCH] madvise MADV_DONTFORK/MADV_DOFORKMichael S. Tsirkin2006-02-141-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Currently, copy-on-write may change the physical address of a page even if the user requested that the page is pinned in memory (either by mlock or by get_user_pages). This happens if the process forks meanwhile, and the parent writes to that page. As a result, the page is orphaned: in case of get_user_pages, the application will never see any data hardware DMA's into this page after the COW. In case of mlock'd memory, the parent is not getting the realtime/security benefits of mlock. In particular, this affects the Infiniband modules which do DMA from and into user pages all the time. This patch adds madvise options to control whether memory range is inherited across fork. Useful e.g. for when hardware is doing DMA from/into these pages. Could also be useful to an application wanting to speed up its forks by cutting large areas out of consideration. Signed-off-by: Michael S. | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This adds a relatively simplistic clock framework for sh. The initial goal behind this is to clean up the arch/sh/kernel/time.c mess and to get the CPU subtype-specific frequency setting and calculation code moved somewhere more sensible. * [PATCH] sh: I/O routine cleanups and ioremap() overhaulPaul Mundt2006-01-163-201/+244
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This introduces a few changes in the way that the I/O routines are defined on SH, specifically so that things like the iomap API properly wrap through the machvec for board-specific quirks. In addition to this, the old p3_ioremap() work is converted to a more generic __ioremap() that will map through the PMB if it's available, or fall back on page tables for everything else. An alpha-like IO_CONCAT is also added so we can start to clean up the board-specific io.h mess, which will be handled in board update patches.. * [PATCH] sh: IRQ handler updatesPaul Mundt2006-01-162-65/+427
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | This moves the various IRQ controller drivers into a new subdirectory, and also extends the INTC2 IRQ handler to also deal with SH7760 and SH7780 interrupts, rather than just ST-40. The old CONFIG_SH_GENERIC has also been removed from the IRQ definitions, as new ports are expected to be based off of CONFIG_SH_UNKNOWN. Since there are plenty of incompatible machvecs, CONFIG_SH_GENERIC doesn't make sense anymore. * [PATCH] atomic_long_t & include/asm-generic/atomic.h V2Christoph Lameter2006-01-061-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Several counters already have the need to use 64 atomic variables on 64 bit platforms (see mm_counter_t in sched.h). We have to do ugly ifdefs to fall back to 32 bit atomic on 32 bit platforms. The VM statistics patch that I am working on will also make more extensive use of atomic64. This patch introduces a new type atomic_long_t by providing definitions in asm-generic/atomic.h that works similar to the c "long" type. Its 32 bits on 32 bit platforms and 64 bits on 64 bit platforms. Also cleans up the determination of the mm_counter_t in sched.h. * [PATCH] madvise(MADV_REMOVE): remove pages from tmpfs shm backing storeBadari Pulavarty2006-01-061-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Here is the patch to implement madvise(MADV_REMOVE) - which frees up a given range of pages & its associated backing store. Current implementation supports only shmfs/tmpfs and other filesystems return -ENOSYS. "Some app allocates large tmpfs files, then when some task quits and some client disconnect, some memory can be released. However the only way to release tmpfs-swap is to MADV_REMOVE". - Andrea Arcangeli Databases want to use this feature to drop a section of their bufferpool (shared memory segments) - without writing back to disk/swap space. This feature is also useful for supporting hot-plug memory on UML. Concerns raised by Andrew Morton: - "We have no plan for holepunching! If we _do_ have such a plan (or might in the future) then what would the API look like? I think sys_holepunch(fd, start, len), so we should start out with that." - Using madvise is very weird, because people will ask "why do I need to mmap my file before I can stick a hole in it?" - None of the other madvise operations call into the filesystem in this manner. A broad question is: is this capability an MM operation or a filesytem operation? truncate, for example, is a filesystem operation which sometimes has MM side-effects. madvise is an mm operation and with this patch, it gains FS side-effects, only they're really, really significant ones." Comments: - Andrea suggested the fs operation too but then it's more efficient to have it as a mm operation with fs side effects, because they don't immediatly know fd and physical offset of the range. It's possible to fixup in userland and to use the fs operation but it's more expensive, the vmas are already in the kernel and we can use them. Short term plan & Future Direction: - We seem to need this interface only for shmfs/tmpfs files in the short term. We have to add hooks into the filesystem for correctness and completeness. This is what this patch does. - In the future, plan is to support both fs and mmap apis also. This also involves (other) filesystem specific functions to be implemented. - Current patch doesn't support VM_NONLINEAR - which can be addressed in the future. * [PATCH] atomic: inc_not_zeroNick Piggin2005-11-131-0/+15
| | | | | | | | | | | Introduce an atomic_inc_not_zero operation. Make this a special case of atomic_add_unless because lockless pagecache actually wants atomic_inc_not_negativeone due to its offset refcount. * [PATCH] ide: move CONFIG_IDE_MAX_HWIFS into linux/ide.hBjorn Helgaas2005-11-091-4/+0

* [PATCH] fix remaining missing includesTim Schmielau2005-11-072-0/+3

This should now allow not to include sched.h from module.h, which is done by a followup patch. * [PATCH] sh: Drop hp690 discontig supportPaul Mundt2005-11-072-68/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | There was only one board using this (hp690 specifically), and it just so happens that it's only physically discontiguous at the "normal" P1 offset. If we bump up the P1 offset, it's possible to hit a shadowed region of memory where we suddenly become magically contiguous. As people have been using this shadowed region workaround for quite some time (and without any adverse effects), it's time to drop the left over discontig bits that no longer have any practical use (it was always very much hp690-centric to begin with). * [PATCH] sh: pte_mkhuge() compile fix for !CONFIG_HUGETLB_PAGEPaul Mundt2005-11-071-0/+2
| | | | | | | | | | | | Presently it is bogus to call pte_mkhuge() outside of the CONFIG_HUGETLB_PAGE context, as the only processors that support _PAGE_SZHUGE do so in the hugetlbpage context only (and this is the only time that _PAGE_SZHUGE is even defined). SH-2 and SH-3 do not support huge pages at all, and so it is not possible to enable this. * [PATCH] semaphore: Remove __MUTEX_INITIALIZER()Arthur Othieno2005-10-301-3/+0
| | | | | | | | | __MUTEX_INITIALIZER() has no users, and equates to the more commonly used DECLARE_MUTEX(), thus making it pretty much redundant. Remove it for good. * [PATCH] vm: remove unused/broken page_pte[_prot] macrosTejun Heo2005-10-301-2/+0
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This patch removes page_pte_prot and page_pte macros from all architectures. Some architectures define both, some only page_pte (broken) and others none. These macros are not used anywhere. page_pte_prot(page, prot) is identical to mk_pte(page, prot) and page_pte(page) is identical to page_pte_prot(page, __pgprot(0)). * The following architectures define both page_pte_prot and page_pte arm, arm26, ia64, sh64, sparc, sparc64 * The following architectures define only page_pte (broken) frv, i386, m32r, mips, sh, x86-64 * All other architectures define neither Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <htejun@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Andrew Morton <akpm@osdl.org> Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@osdl.org>

* [PATCH] add sem_is_read/write_locked()Rik Van Riel2005-10-291-0/+5
| | | | | | | | | | Add sem_is_read/write_locked functions to the read/write semaphores, along the same lines of the *_is_locked spinlock functions. * [PATCH] Remove unused var from asm/futex.hPaolo 'Blaisorblade' Giarrusso2005-09-211-1/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | As recently done by Russell King for ARM, commit 4732efbeb997189d9f9b04708dc26bf8613ed721 introduces a generic asm/futex.h copied along most arches, which includes a "-ENOSYS support" to be changed if needed. However, it includes an unused var (taken from the "real" version) which GCC warns about. Remove it from all arches having that file version (i.e. same GIT id). $ git-diff-tree -r HEAD and $ git-ls-tree -r HEAD include/|grep 9feff4ce1424bc390608326240be369eb13aa648 may be more interesting than looking at the patch itself, to make sure I've just copied the arm header to all other archs having the original dummy version of this file.
