* [BPI] Improve unreachable/ColdCall heurstics to handle loops.Taewook Oh2019-11-271-0/+18
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Summary: While updatePostDominatedByUnreachable attemps to find basic blocks that are post-domianted by unreachable blocks, it currently cannot handle loops precisely, because it doesn't use the actual post dominator tree analysis but relies on heuristics of visiting basic blocks in post-order. More precisely, when the entire loop is post-dominated by the unreachable block, current algorithm fails to detect the entire loop as post-dominated by the unreachable because when the algorithm reaches to the loop latch it fails to tell all its successors (including the loop header) will "eventually" be post-domianted by the unreachable block, because the algorithm hasn't visited the loop header yet. This makes BPI for the loop latch to assume that loop backedges are taken with 100% of probability. And because of this, block frequency info sometimes marks virtually dead loops (which are post dominated by unreachable blocks) super hot, because 100% backedge-taken probability makes the loop iteration count the max value. updatePostDominatedByColdCall has the exact same problem as well. To address this problem, this patch makes PostDominatedByUnreachable/PostDominatedByColdCall to be computed with the actual post-dominator tree. * [BPI] Reduce the probability of unreachable edge to minimal value greater than 0Serguei Katkov2017-05-181-21/+21
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | The probability of edge coming to unreachable block should be as low as possible. The change reduces the probability to minimal value greater than zero. The bug https://bugs.llvm.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32214 show the example when the probability of edge coming to unreachable block is greater than for edge coming to out of the loop and it causes incorrect loop rotation. Please note that with this change the behavior of unreachable heuristic is a bit different than others. Specifically, before this change the sum of probabilities coming to unreachable blocks have the same weight for all branches (it was just split over all edges of this block coming to unreachable blocks). With this change it might be slightly different but not to much due to probability of taken branch to unreachable block is really small. * [BPI] Ignore remainder while distributing the remaining probability from ↵Serguei Katkov2017-05-121-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | unreachanble This is a follow up patch for https://reviews.llvm.org/rL300440 to address a comment. To make implementation to be consistent with other cases we just ignore the remainder after distribution of remaining probability between reachable edges. If we reduced the probability of some edges coming to unreachable blocks we should distribute the remaining part across other edges coming to reachable blocks to satisfy the condition that sum of all probabilities should be equal to one. If this remaining part is not divided by number of "reachable" edges then we get this remainder. This remainder probability should be pretty small. Other cases just ignore if the sum of probabilities is not equal to one so we do the same. * [BPI] Use metadata info before any other heuristicsSerguei Katkov2017-04-171-0/+225
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Metadata potentially is more precise than any heuristics we use, so it makes sense to use first metadata info if it is available. However it makes sense to examine it against other strong heuristics like unreachable one. If edge coming to unreachable block has higher probability then it is expected by unreachable heuristic then we use heuristic and remaining probability is distributed among other reachable blocks equally. An example where metadata might be more strong then unreachable heuristic is as follows: it is possible that there are two branches and for the branch A metadata says that its probability is (0, 2^25). For the branch B the probability is (1, 2^25). So the expectation is that first edge of B is hotter than first edge of A because first edge of A did not executed at least once. If first edge of A points to the unreachable block then using the unreachable heuristics we'll set the probability for A to (1, 2^20) and now edge of A becomes hotter than edge of B. This is unexpected behavior. * [BPI] Refactor post domination calculation and simple fix for ColdCallSerguei Katkov2017-04-121-0/+37
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Collection of PostDominatedByUnreachable and PostDominatedByColdCall have been split out of heuristics itself. Update of the data happens now for each basic block (before update for PostDominatedByColdCall might be skipped if unreachable or matadata heuristic handled this basic block). This separation allows re-ordering of heuristics without loosing the post-domination information. * [BPI] Add new LazyBPI analysisAdam Nemet2016-07-281-0/+1
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Summary: The motivation is the same as in D22141: In order to add the hotness attribute to optimization remarks we need BFI to be available in all passes that emit optimization remarks. BFI depends on BPI so unless we make this lazy as well we would still compute BPI unconditionally. The solution is to use the new LazyBPI pass in LazyBFI and only compute BPI when computation of BFI is requested by the client. I extended the laziness test using a LoopDistribute test to also cover BPI. * Use fixed-point representation for BranchProbability.Cong Hou2015-09-251-34/+34
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | BranchProbability now is represented by its numerator and denominator in uint32_t type. This patch changes this representation into a fixed point that is represented by the numerator in uint32_t type and a constant denominator 1<<31. This is quite similar to the representation of BlockMass in BlockFrequencyInfoImpl.h. There are several pros and cons of this change: Pros: 1. It uses only a half space of the current one. 2. Some operations are much faster like plus, subtraction, comparison, and scaling by an integer. Cons: 1. Constructing a probability using arbitrary numerator and denominator needs additional calculations. 2. It is a little less precise than before as we use a fixed denominator. For example, 1 - 1/3 may not be exactly identical to 1 / 3 (this will lead to many BranchProbability unit test failures). This should not matter when we only use it for branch probability. If we use it like a rational value for some precise calculations we may need another construct like ValueRatio. One important reason for this change is that we propose to store branch probabilities instead of edge weights in MachineBasicBlock. We also want clients to use probability instead of weight when adding successors to a MBB. The current BranchProbability has more space which may be a concern. * Re-apply r234898 and fix tests.Daniel Jasper2015-04-151-0/+28
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This commit makes LLVM not estimate branch probabilities when doing a single bit bitmask tests. The code that originally made me discover this is: if ((a & 0x1) == 0x1) { .. } In this case we don't actually have any branch probability information and should not assume to have any. LLVM transforms this into: %and = and i32 %a, 1 %tobool = icmp eq i32 %and, 0 So, in this case, the result of a bitwise and is compared against 0, but nevertheless, we should not assume to have probability information. CodeGen/ARM/2013-10-11-select-stalls.ll started failing because the changed probabilities changed the results of ARMBaseInstrInfo::isProfitableToIfCvt() and led to an Ifcvt of the diamond in the test. AFAICT, the test was never meant to test this and thus changing the test input slightly to not change the probabilities seems like the best way to preserve the meaning of the test. llvm-svn: 234979

This adds an explicit type parameter to the gep instruction so that when the first parameter becomes an opaque pointer type, the type to gep through is still available to the instructions. * This doesn't modify gep operators, only instructions (operators will be handled separately) * Textual IR changes only. Bitcode (including upgrade) and changing the in-memory representation will be in separate changes. * geps of vectors are transformed as: getelementptr <4 x float*> %x, ... ->getelementptr float, <4 x float*> %x, ... Then, once the opaque pointer type is introduced, this will ultimately look like: getelementptr float, <4 x ptr> %x with the unambiguous interpretation that it is a vector of pointers to float. * address spaces remain on the pointer, not the type: getelementptr float addrspace(1)* %x ->getelementptr float, float addrspace(1)* %x Then, eventually: getelementptr float, ptr addrspace(1) %x Importantly, the massive amount of test case churn has been automated by same crappy python code. I had to manually update a few test cases that wouldn't fit the script's model (r228970,r229196,r229197,r229198). The python script just massages stdin and writes the result to stdout, I then wrapped that in a shell script to handle replacing files, then using the usual find+xargs to migrate all the files. update.py: import fileinput import sys import re ibrep = re.compile(r"(^.*?[^%\w]getelementptr inbounds )(((?:<\d* x )?)(.*?)(| addrspace\(\d\)) *\*(|>)(?:$| *(?:%|@|null|undef|blockaddress|getelementptr|addrspacecast|bitcast|inttoptr|\[\[[a-zA-Z]|\{\{).*$))") normrep = re.compile( r"(^.*?[^%\w]getelementptr )(((?:<\d* x )?)(.*?)(| addrspace\(\d\)) *\*(|>)(?:$| *(?:%|@|null|undef|blockaddress|getelementptr|addrspacecast|bitcast|inttoptr|\[\[[a-zA-Z]|\{\{).*$))") def conv(match, line): if not match: return line line = match.groups()[0] if len(match.groups()[5]) == 0: line += match.groups()[2] line += match.groups()[3] line += ", " line += match.groups()[1] line += "\n" return line for line in sys.stdin: if line.find("getelementptr ") == line.find("getelementptr inbounds"): if line.find("getelementptr inbounds") != line.find("getelementptr inbounds ("): line = conv(re.match(ibrep, line), line) elif line.find("getelementptr ") != line.find("getelementptr ("): line = conv(re.match(normrep, line), line) sys.stdout.write(line) apply.sh: for name in "$@" do python3 `dirname "$0"`/update.py < "$name" > "$name.tmp" && mv "$name.tmp" "$name" rm -f "$name.tmp" done The actual commands: From llvm/src: find test/ -name *.ll | xargs ./apply.sh From llvm/src/tools/clang: find test/ -name *.mm -o -name *.m -o -name *.cpp -o -name *.c | xargs -I '{}' ../../apply.sh "{}" From llvm/src/tools/polly: find test/ -name *.ll | xargs ./apply.sh After that, check-all (with llvm, clang, clang-tools-extra, lld, compiler-rt, and polly all checked out). The extra 'rm' in the apply.sh script is due to a few files in clang's test suite using interesting unicode stuff that my python script was throwing exceptions on. None of those files needed to be migrated, so it seemed sufficient to ignore those cases. Reviewers: rafael, dexonsmith, grosser Differential Revision: http://reviews.llvm.org/D7636 llvm-svn: 230786
* IR: Make metadata typeless in assemblyDuncan P. N. Exon Smith2014-12-151-3/+3
| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | Now that `Metadata` is typeless, reflect that in the assembly. These are the matching assembly changes for the metadata/value split in r223802. - Only use the `metadata` type when referencing metadata from a call intrinsic -- i.e., only when it's used as a `Value`. - Stop pretending that `ValueAsMetadata` is wrapped in an `MDNode` when referencing it from call intrinsics. So, assembly like this: define @foo(i32 %v) { call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{i32 %v}, metadata !0) call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{i32 7}, metadata !0) call void @llvm.foo(metadata !1, metadata !0) call void @llvm.foo(metadata !3, metadata !0) call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{metadata !3}, metadata !0) ret void, !bar !2 } !0 = metadata !{metadata !2} !1 = metadata !{i32* @global} !2 = metadata !{metadata !3} !3 = metadata !{} turns into this: define @foo(i32 %v) { call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32 %v, metadata !0) call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32 7, metadata !0) call void @llvm.foo(metadata i32* @global, metadata !0) call void @llvm.foo(metadata !3, metadata !0) call void @llvm.foo(metadata !{!3}, metadata !0) ret void, !bar !2 } !0 = !{!2} !1 = !{i32* @global} !2 = !{!3} !3 = !{} I wrote an upgrade script that handled almost all of the tests in llvm and many of the tests in cfe (even handling many `CHECK` lines). I've attached it (or will attach it in a moment if you're speedy) to PR21532 to help everyone update their out-of-tree testcases. This is part of PR21532. llvm-svn: 224257
* Consider (x == -1) unlikely in BranchProbabilityInfoHal Finkel2013-11-011-0/+39
| | | | | | | | | | | | This adds another heuristic to BPI, similar to the existing heuristic that considers (x == 0) unlikely to be true. As suggested in the PACT'98 paper by Deitrich, Cheng, and Hwu, -1 is often used to indicate an invalid index, and equality comparisons with -1 are also unlikely to succeed. Local experimentation supports this hypothesis: This yields a 1-2% speedup in the test-suite sqlite benchmark on the PPC A2 core, with no significant regressions. llvm-svn: 193855
