The most common pattern is a tail call + br to a block with nothing but a 'ret'. The number of tail call to loop conversions remains the same (1618 by my count). The new algorithm does a local scan over the use-def chains to identify local "alloca-derived" values, as well as points where the alloca could escape. Then, a visit over the CFG marks blocks as being before or after the allocas have escaped, and annotates the calls accordingly. llvm-svn: 208017

| | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | | This requires a number of steps. 1) Move value_use_iterator into the Value class as an implementation detail 2) Change it to actually be a *Use* iterator rather than a *User* iterator. 3) Add an adaptor which is a User iterator that always looks through the Use to the User. 4) Wrap these in Value::use_iterator and Value::user_iterator typedefs. 5) Add the range adaptors as Value::uses() and Value::users(). 6) Update *all* of the callers to correctly distinguish between whether they wanted a use_iterator (and to explicitly dig out the User when needed), or a user_iterator which makes the Use itself totally opaque. Because #6 requires churning essentially everything that walked the Use-Def chains, I went ahead and added all of the range adaptors and switched them to range-based loops where appropriate. Also because the renaming requires at least churning every line of code, it didn't make any sense to split these up into multiple commits -- all of which would touch all of the same lies of code. The result is still not quite optimal. The Value::use_iterator is a nice regular iterator, but Value::user_iterator is an iterator over User*s rather than over the User objects themselves. As a consequence, it fits a bit awkwardly into the range-based world and it has the weird extra-dereferencing 'operator->' that so many of our iterators have. I think this could be fixed by providing something which transforms a range of T&s into a range of T*s, but that *can* be separated into another patch, and it isn't yet 100% clear whether this is the right move. However, this change gets us most of the benefit and cleans up a substantial amount of code around Use and User. =] llvm-svn: 203364

Without the changes introduced into this patch, if TRE saw any allocas at all, TRE would not perform TRE *or* mark callsites with the tail marker. Because TRE runs after mem2reg, this inadequacy is not a death sentence. But given a callsite A without escaping alloca argument, A may not be able to have the tail marker placed on it due to a separate callsite B having a write-back parameter passed in via an argument with the nocapture attribute. Assume that B is the only other callsite besides A and B only has nocapture escaping alloca arguments (*NOTE* B may have other arguments that are not passed allocas). In this case not marking A with the tail marker is unnecessarily conservative since: 1. By assumption A has no escaping alloca arguments itself so it can not access the caller's stack via its arguments. 2. Since all of B's escaping alloca arguments are passed as parameters with the nocapture attribute, we know that B does not stash said escaping allocas in a manner that outlives B itself and thus could be accessed indirectly by A. With the changes introduced by this patch: 1. If we see any escaping allocas passed as a capturing argument, we do nothing and bail early. 2. If we do not see any escaping allocas passed as captured arguments but we do see escaping allocas passed as nocapture arguments: i. We do not perform TRE to avoid PR962 since the code generator produces significantly worse code for the dynamic allocas that would be created by the TRE algorithm. ii. If we do not return twice, mark call sites without escaping allocas with the tail marker. *NOTE* This excludes functions with escaping nocapture allocas. 3. If we do not see any escaping allocas at all (whether captured or not): i. If we do not have usage of setjmp, mark all callsites with the tail marker. ii. This sinks the test of 'callIsSmall' down into TTI where targets can control it. The whole thing feels very hack-ish to me though. I've left a FIXME comment about the fundamental design problem this presents. It isn't yet clear to me what the users of this function *really* care about. I'll have to do more analysis to figure that out. Putting this here at least provides it access to proper analysis pass tools and other such. It also allows us to more cleanly implement the baseline cost interfaces in TTI. With this commit, it is now theoretically possible to simplify much of the inline cost analysis's handling of calls by calling through to this interface. That conversion will have to happen in subsequent commits as it requires more extensive restructuring of the inline cost analysis. The CodeMetrics class is now really only in the business of running over a block of code and aggregating the metrics on that block of code, with the actual cost evaluation done entirely in terms of TTI. llvm-svn: 173148

I can't have broken anything (I strictly added headers, and reordered them, never removed), but they may not be the headers you'd really like to identify as containing the API being implemented. The real goal is unifying our logic and simplifying the interfaces. A summary of the changes follows: - Make 'callIsSmall' actually accept a callsite so it can handle intrinsics, and simplify callers appropriately. - Nuke a completely bogus declaration of 'callIsSmall' that was still lurking in InlineCost.h... No idea how this got missed. - Teach the 'isInstructionFree' about the various more intelligent 'free' heuristics that got added to the inline cost analysis during review and testing. This mostly surrounds int->ptr and ptr->int casts. - Switch most of the interesting parts of the inline cost analysis that were essentially computing 'is this instruction free?' to use the code metrics routine instead. This way we won't keep duplicating logic. All of this is motivated by the desire to allow other passes to compute a roughly equivalent 'cost' metric for a particular basic block as the inline cost analysis.
